Default Gordon Brown

We all know that Tony Blair resigned today and now Gordon Brown takes over as PM today. What I still don't understand how Brown becomes PM without an election.

Is there a line of succession in the UK similar to the US, where if the President dies or resigns (as Nixon did in 1974) the Vice-Preisdent becomes President.

Over here in the UK we elect a political Party, not its leader (unfortunately).. Gordon Brown may have finally got to be PM but I reckon it will be short lived..

Just like in Belgium where the majority delivers the PM and yes, he can be changed without having elections.

Gordon Brown has the support of many British. He's very social, well educated and has a no-nonsense image. The conservatives are gearing up for the 2009 elections but they lack a bit of a charismatic leader at the moment.

I never trusted that Blair fella very much but...I don't trust socialists in general

I'll give Brown the benefit of the doubt and I'm curious on his points of view towards Europe. Will the British join the EU or not?
