| Paul you're gonna love this. Time magazine's cover this week features, as always, their "Person of The Year". Like some other few times, the POTY is not a specific person but: ![]() They say the YouTube boom, etc. merits the average "internaut" the award. But guess what, they had allowed these internauts to vote for themselves in the mag's website. And they voted for Hugo Chávez! TIME.com - Person of the Year Preview 2006 - Who Will It Be? If you don't get the poll results, make your vote and you will see it. Numero 2 is the president of Iran with 21% (Chávez made 35%). YouTube got 11% and Dubya 8%. So one guess they ignored the "free election" to skip giving the honors to a widely-known opponent of Mr. Bush! Hey, isn't it ironic? Helloooooo!

| So Nano, they are giving person of the year to youtube? I'm glad to see people appreciate President Chavez for being the man who "walks the walk!"

Saw a very good documentary on Chavez a few days ago. It was BBC made so it was not that rightwinged! Poverty has raised enormously under Chavez. The favelas are growing rapidly. The big industry is almost destroyed. Factories that are placed under statecommand deliver defective goods, make enormous losses and are mismanaged by Yugo-darlings. Economists simply can't understand why a country that has so much income from the oil-biz (and since Yugo controls those pipelines) has such a deficit and so many poor people. Corruption is beyond imagination and crimefigures are going through the roof. Good achievement for that shit-talking-a**-hole that walks the walk! But it's not a bad thing as Paul's support is paying off!! All people are almost equal there! Just like in the USSR they all will be poor and there will be no envy! Great achievement BTW, over the past weeks he's losing his support from many other heads of states in Latin America, maybe with the exception of Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega who changes poilitics every year and would found the Disco Duck party to stay in power. European leftist leaders simply avoid the guy. I don't worry, that donkey will be ousted in the near future Beavis and Butthead 2006: ![]() |

And justifiably so. The original idea behind "Man of the year" was not to reward the best/kindest/greatest man of the year (this is a common misconception), but to discuss the biggest newsmaker and influential figure of the year. It's not a contest and there is no prize. The most influential and newsworthy people in the world aren't usually the nicest. Seems that they're gradually giving into what the public thinks "man of the year" should be though. In 2001 they gave it to Giuliani instead of bin Laden. |

| Graham, I hope Paul also gets the point! If Chavez would be elected man of the year, it wouldn't mean Time or its readers supporting him! |

| Johan, Graham, point taken. Time's POTY is merely of reflection of impact. The current jackass in the White House was also a POTY. In fact Graham, I did remember there was some controversy when Time punked out and gave it to Giulliani instead of Bin Laden. Back to Chavez. Despite what you saw Johan, the people like the direction Chavez is taking them as evidenced by the recent election. We both know that the problems in Venezuala existed long before Chavez came on the scene and one can hope that his programs will alleviate some or most of them in reasonable time. It seems the corporate media establishment is trying lay the ground work for a coup or something similar. I've seen this done all too often. So despite the vote of the people, everyone hates the guy and Venezuala is falling apart based on media reports. Wow, like I've never seen this playbook before. Divide and conquer. I suspect his promise to nationalize Venezuala's oil has pissed off the oil wealthy robber barons in Europe and North America. They can't let this indigenous populist do that. Time to crank up the media propaganda machinery as well as military options to take care of their problem. Sadly, sounds like you celebrate this and with that I notice you didn't include anything Chavez's opponents offer to improve the lives of the people. Of course I know they don't give a rat's ass cause they want control and all that money from that nation's oil.
