One thing about the perception of maturity according to age: remember that life expectancy in the XVIIIth century was much shorter (approx. 51 for men), so age 35 was much more advanced in one's life at the time (over 68% of one's lifespan), and definitely more than age 45 today.

35 was actually old, as compared to the perception of that age today, and the supposed maturity associated was in unison.

The possible (probable?) reversal of the trend in the evolution of life expectancy in the US (due to obesity) excepted, those having lived up to age 45 today, actually face a higher life expectancy than the current figures suggest, as each generation sets a new record, and the figures known today are based on the average lifespan of people born in the first half of the XXth century, not that of those born after the major advances in medicine and vaccines took place in the XXth century. Age 80 or more is considered to be a quite safe life expectancy for someone born in 1961.

Obama can be assumed to be at the middle of his life (or perhaps less), when the Framers of the Constitution deemed necessary to have at least reached 2/3 of one's life to be maturely fit to assume presidency to the nation.

This is just to put things into perspective; it is not an indication of my own feelings towards Obama's ability to govern the country, or the relevancy of age with regards to such ability..

My feeling is that, like in most elections, this will be another case of choice between the least of two evils.

His choice will come at any time ...and in some ways choosing Hillary may be just the thing to add a boost to his floundering campaign . Barack should be doing better now than he is. This is worrisome . Hillary could add a level of energy and yes even a dose of "experience" to the ticket.

The Hillbilly crowd that flat out won't vote for a black won't change their mind no matter what he does. So adding yet a woman isn't going to matter to those folks anyway .... they're already beyond reach.

What Hillary does attract is the white women vote and there's a whole heck of a lot of those ....

There's no other choice that immediately brings so much to the ticket and Obama needs that additional vibrancy Hillary has. I think at this point , he needs her.



Otherwise ....who else ??

A story in the NY Times says Obama will announce this week and it is either

Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN),
Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE), or
Gov. Tim Kaine (D-VA).

But they don't know. When Obama has reached a decision, he is not going to send an e-mail to the NY Times to tip it off. Supporters will get e-mails early in the morning as a reward for contributing, then a formal joint appearance will take place for the media. The two candidates will probably spend the day campaigning in several states.

I'd be OK with that. He's got spunk ..... and that's what the democrats need a little more of right now .... a good aggressive attack (back) dog.

Biden can be a bit of a windbag and blowhard--but can also slice and dice verbally as he did to Rudy Giuliani when he labeled all his sentences as consisting of "a noun, a verb & 9/11" NAILED IT!!! That comment put the final nail in Rudy's presidential coffin.

But Biden also knows his foreign policy--major advantage....

Biden has good sound bites but I don't trust him to walk the walk on the issues.

Wesley Clark was one of my choices also--since he's got the military bona fides to deflect the right wing attack machine and is articulate and a good debater and had the balls to say that just because McSame was a war prisoner doesn't automatically qualify him for the presidency ---took major heat for that one --BUT--he's been told he won't be needed at the Dems convention---and I heard him say on a radio interview that he has business in Milan, Italy during the convention....so --since he didn't get the "keep yourself open" call---he supposedly isn't in the running.

Biden's got some problems especially with his votes on the credit card bankruptcy bill that passed...as a Senator from Delaware he has some major BANKS in his constituency...so he failed us on that...and he's been known to talk a good talk and then waffle and buckle under to the right----BUT he's the best of the 3 being touted...unless there is a "mystery candidate"--which is always a possibility....

I'm prepared to be disappointed.

Ya know...I'm thinking, if only Obama could live with the decision, the best choice for VP would be ...........Hillary. YEAH, i SAID IT. We gotta win this. She makes it much more viable for that to happen. I wanted to move past the Nineties--but now I'm wondering if we can win it without her help. The Clintons are fighters--they get down in the mud and twist balls, then stomp on 'em.. ...and maybe this is the best way to get that damn health care dream realized?

Maybe I'm a dreamer...but this morning, I'm hoping he picks Hillary.
