Well it's said to be expected to be total chaos here in Los Angeles tomorrow morning and throughout the day. I think this is totally ridiculous and really uncalled for. The reasons being everyone is expecting this to be utter unlawfullness and rioting and looting all over Los Angeles county. What does this really solve? It just reinforces what everyone already says about middle class to low income illeagal immigrants. If you ask me theres a whole lot of misinformed people going out there tomorrow to partake in a march that stands for one thing and will wind up on the news for completely other reasons. People getting hurt, buisnesses being closed for fear they are going to be looted and a whole lot of kids and families on the streets losing money, risking their jobs and school. Just people getting on the band-wagon looking for drama to partake in. I say the people that are really affected in this won't be marching in the streets acting like a bunch of hoodlums, they are going through the proper channels in a civilized way to be heard.

Whoa Whoa Whoa..Who said anything about being overrun by refugees? I'll admit maybe some of the people are overreacting to the issues at hand here but at the same time....immigrants that work here in our country are the very reason most of our groceries in our markets are affordable. I mean come on, if you or I started picking strawberries in the fields here in Bakersfield in 100 + degree weather they had better pay us wayyyyy more than 6 bucks an hour. What would that do to the cost for the consumer? This country has been built in part by our immigrant farm workers. Nonetheless I think that the people protesting here in Los Angeles are just hopping on the bandwagon to join the drama. I have relatives that have gone through the proper channels to become citizens here. Theres a right way and a wrong way to go about legal standings here in the US. Like I said people that really want to be heard, and want to have a positive response to the issues at hand will go through the proper channels to resolve it!

Most people were better off with sustainance berry picking than what we have today. This whole entire low wage-illegal immigration turmoil is fueled by people who want cheap labor, cheap oil, and quick fixes. Wall-street and classical liberals have formed a grand coalition.

The quid pro quo scenario works like this: Illegals are hired as nannys, berry pickers, ect. and they are told that the U.S. government may one day give the immigrant's kids a chance to go to school and thus raise the family above poverty. Wall-street says as far as now we'll do very little for you except allow more of your family to escape your impoverished country.

In order for a traditional American household to compete with this, both husband and wife have to go into the workforce to make ends meet and end-up raising the kids with nannies and spending 20 hours a week in traffic. There's no universal disarmament.

Solution: Insist on improving the conditions of people living in Mexico. Next time their President laughs in your face and says the border extends to Montana, shut him out! Put sanctions on him!

What may end up happening, is that this generation of immigrants may realize that apartment living in big U.S. cities ain't no bowl of cherries. If the U.S. government stops on the spot welfare and punishes employers who hire illegals, they may go back to their country of origin. In several instances, migrant workers become unemployed and their employers vote for this present welfare system and send everyone else the bill.

Yesterday was a beautifull day for roundups and mass arrests. Too bad W folded under hysteria from the left. Don't believe this shit about cheap vegetables - American business is artificially depressing the cost of labor in this country.

Lock down the borders, repeal NAFTA, CAFTA and all of the other "Free Trade" scams. No "guest workers" or H1B visas.

I agree paul. This is a deterrant of the real issues at hand here in the US. But tell me, who of you would work for such cheap wages doing such hard work? I'll bet you though on the same issue that 99% of those people rioting and striking aren't even directly affected by the propositions!

The wages would not be so cheap if they restricted it to U.S. workers. The corporate farm would have to pay more and that's not what Wallstreet wants. Thus an illegal immigrant is found on the highway and accepts the job without negotiation and it lowers wages below the minimum wage. Agriculture comes under a different heading in the application of state laws involving wages.

Who would work like that for $7-$8 per hour? I do!! I'm an underemployed cart attendant/sales floor associate/cashier in retail.

I have 88 credits and a 2 year degree in accounting. In prior years, I worked in payroll, accounts payable, and billing and made about 20G/year. After being given the shaft and taking on someone else's responsibilities for 2 years, I quit and went into commission based sales involving electronics. There was little training and much lower commissions during the Holiday season. So now with a not so spiffy resume, I've been destined to low end retail jobs that high schoolers mostly perform.

Some people think I'm some commie windbag but outsourcing, no healthcare, competition for low wage jobs is what the larger struggle is. That is why I frequently refer to the FDR period as that point where I agree it was important to reign in unchecked capitalism. Repubs/conservatives have conversely hated it. Now, if you are a rich conservative who is heartless it makes some sense to return to the days of the robber barons. To the middle class regardless of party, I encourage them to read a little history. The things taken for granted now like having a weekend, 40 hour workweek, worker safety, etc was all in an attempt to put value in the quality of life. So as you and many Americans struggle, oil companies are reaping record profits again. In fact I believe corporate profits in general went up as a whole last year.
Anyway eddie I hope that wherever you find yourself in the future, your quality of life will be properly served.

I too struggle eddie. I'm working a not-so high wage job and trying to make ends meet just like the next guy/gal. So yeah, I go to school full time work full time and raise 3 kids all the while. I feel for the illeagal workers but at the same time here I am a citizen here in the states and struggle just as hard. My whole point in making a fuss to the "walk out" deal was this....The people around where I work and live were just jumping on the bandwagon in hopes to get a few days off of work and make a 10 second appearance on some local news channel. And as for you paul you sexy thang, commie windbag or not, I'm waitin for you to walk me down that nude beach in San Diego

Guys, as an outsider it's hard not to believe that wages have dropped cosiderably in the U.S.A. over the past 30 years. I remember there would be TV shows and films where even average guys were earning $25,000 p.a., when the average salary here was about $1,600 p.a. The average here nowadays is about $38,000 and yet you guys still seem to be in the $50,000 ballpark. What's going on???

BTW: I don't think getting rid of all your foreign labour would make wages go up by very much. You're the country that more than any other, wants everything cheap, cheap, cheap. Only low wages and (therefore) low supply costs can bring that to your malls.

Paul is absolutely right in what he writes. Holidays, shorter working weeks, worker priviledges have all been brought about by constant struggle between the workers and their employers. Too many people nowadays don't realise how much tougher life would be without the collective bargaining and struggle of past generations. Something that we are now in danger of completely losing in favour of the needs of pure capitalism. It is the duty of all the ordinary folk of the world to stand up for themselves and not be browbeaten into practices that compromise everything that has been gained by them over the past 170 years, since the Tolpuddle Martyrs. I do believe the employer/employee power struggle has swung too far back to the employer's favour in recent years.

This is where the argument goes astray for me.

Over the past 25 years or so, society has been convinced to spend, spend, spend. In order to afford these grander lifestyles that have been marketed to the hilt, mom and dad both need to work and devote tremendous energy climbing the ladder of success...and the more overtime hours the better. How else can they pay for the hot tub, the backyard gazebo, the elegant lawn furniture, the large plasma tv with built-in surround-sound system and the $30,000 kitchen renovation?

As well, a slightly modest house is an embarassment...a big house is the ticket. Add to that, two new cars...not an older model and a slightly new one but two new cars with all the options of course, both with current leases or payments. There was a time, not too long ago, when we all hailed the day when the car payments came to an end but these continual payments seem to be a given now in the average household budget. This is the life that's presented to us and you better damn well go for it....you certainly don't want to look like you're not as good as the rest.

Yes, these are the pressures of today. So both parents work and not at jobs where the pay is minimal. If this has resulted in nannies, for example, being needed, it's because this overly-hyped American (and sadly, Canadian too) grand lifestyle warranted this need. More is better in the eyes of the average citizen.

There is a better way....living a simpler, less hectic lifestyle in a small, modest home not only cuts down on the monthly budget, it results in a healthier body and state of mind....and wipes out the need for all those sleep-inducing anti-depressants.
