i'm a generous guy, but in this instance i'll follow the advice of the wisened philosopher linda clifford: i'm gonna keep what i got while it's hot and not give it up for nobody.
Now that's funny !!
And smart .... You are right in your thinking. But for instance, reviewing the TOP 700 songs voted here ( perhaps a good resource for you ) .....do you think you are playing 70% ... 90% ....100% .... of them ?

I'm glad to hear you are not limited to only what is on CD . Do you have quality issues then with what you play from vinyl? It's funny how that concerns us these days ... I used to hang out at radio stations in the early 70's and I remember the DJ's tossing those 45's around between plays without a concern. .....

I bet you are expanding your own collection to increase your program material ......although your library is already awesome no doubt ... ..but is any collection complete ?

Barry are you programming on a daily basis ?? Or do you pre-program a week or more at a time ? How do you schedule it , if you don't mind explaining ....

Thanks .....

marky,

thursday night i had dinner with a college roommate and woke up with a vicious onslaught of food poisoning. i'm still feeling too weak and nauseous to reply in detail, but needless to say i'm glad to read your comments. oddly enough, this same roommate first exposed me to several of the non-mainstream, hardcore disco selections on my station, and is now extolling the virtues of gloria estefan's iTunes-only megamix (a bonus track exclusive to a $34.99 album download — i kid you not!)

that's all the poignancy i can muster for now,

Barry....count me as another fan of your station. Your diverse selection of great disco releases really shows your immense knowledge for the music. I was in my teens when disco was at its peak...searching and listening to anything remotely disco-ish but I am in awe at the large percentage of songs that I have never heard.

So many tracks over the last couple of days that have caught my attention:

Bailin' Out and King For A Night, both by Linda Clifford (Where did these come from? They're not on any of the albums in my collection..... )

Alec R. Costandinos' Trocadero Suite (nice!)

Rose Royce's Is It Love You're After (now I know where the samples for Theme From S-Express come from)

The intro of Shalamar's In The Socket was really intriguing. I hadn't heard this in a long time but recognized it right away because the music was totally sampled by Bini and Martini for their excellent mix of Kylie Minogue's On A Night Like This...(and all this time, I thought these guys had some musical talent when all they did was loop a sample..... )

The same thing for the song Get Down Saturday Night by Oliver Cheatham....never heard it before...but it's the basis for Room 5's Make Luv....although they do credit his vocals.

The sweet thing about listening to your station is how it gives each tune the rightful respect it deserves...every note heard, professionally programmed and offered to the listening public just like all those damned classic rock tunes that have been played to death. A couple of hours ago, I heard Touche's Take A Look But Don't Touch. That just sent me to disco heaven but at the same time wondering again why this music was (or still is) shunned by the majority of society.

Hey discokicks, those two cuts are from Linda's "Here's My Love" album. I do believe it came out after her "Let Me Be Your Woman" double album. She worked with several producers on this lp including Norman Harris and gang. The modest radio hit in San Francisco was "I Just Wanna Wanna." A sadly overlooked album. "Lonely Night" is another great cut from the lp. I remember we had tons of promos sitting in the used bins at Aloha Records when it first came out. It was released on CD awhile back so maybe you'll still be able to find it.

hello discokicks,

glad you're enjoying RadioioDisco and linda clifford in particular! i think she's quite underrated. if you collect vinyl, you may be interested in tracking down her many promo 12"s, as most of them have significantly longer versions than the LPs.

yes, i do try to program songs that have been sampled and are worth hearing in the entirety. it's my hope for people like you who know current dance music that these sampled songs will be particularly enjoyable because there's so much you've been missing if you've only heard the typically tiny chunk that's been sampled and looped!

i'm curious to know if Touche's "Take A Look But Don't Touch" was already familiar to you. it is of canadian origin and i know that because of canadian radio's canadian content quotas that many canadian tracks unknown to most americans outside of the club scene were mainstream pop hits in canada. this one is particularly unknown in america but in my experience those who hear it have a similar reaction to yours!

Thanks Keefe....I'll try looking around online for the album. It must have been released mid to late '79 (?) after Let Me Be Your Woman (man, I have always loved that title cut) and the I'm Yours album. That certainly must have been a busy time in her life!

I have always thought of Linda as the quintessential disco artist....big time act within the disco community but never quite managed to have any crossover pop hits so she remained disco's treasured gem. Kristine W would be Linda's equivalent in today's dance scene.

Thanks for the reply! There have been plenty of samples that have been obvious to me over the past few years but getting back to the roots of disco, I'm coming across so many more that I wasn't aware of. I won't go into a great discussion about today's dance releases but I've always wondered how (or why) someone can hear a few notes or beats of a song and say 'hey, I think I'll loop this thing ad nauseum and make a kewl little dance ditty out of this'.

This is kinda interesting that you asked this because I did buy the original Canadian 12" back in '79....actually August 25, 1979 (like a dweeb, I used to put the date of purchase on my vinyl ). This has always been a favourite of mine. Listening to it currently, I'm wondering who did the lead vocal....it sounds a bit like France Joli. I must have heard this on radio at the time because I was a little too young to go to the clubs but, honestly, our Canadian content laws really didn't result in more disco on the radios...at least not in my neck of the woods. I do remember hearing Gino Soccio's Dancer and arrogantly laughing at the edited 3:30 version...feeling so much more advanced than pop radio and its listeners.

Another song, in particular, that I do recall hearing on the radio was the Black Lite Orchestra's cover of Ennicone's Once Upon A Time In The West. This prompted me to buy the album back in '77....a rural, shy Canadian teenage boy who was just mesmerized by this pounding disco stomper surrounded with all its beautiful orchestration. I definitely was hooked by then.

Hello barry,

do you have any idea why I can't access your radioiodisco-page anymore? The stream doesn't work for me either :(

hello FunkyChris and discokicks,

i sent some updates for my web page to the radioio tech people on sunday, and the web page might've been temporarily down while they made the changes. i didn't know about the stream being interrupted. maybe something similar happened. i just checked both the iTunes and the winMedia streams and they're now both working fine. i'm sorry you had problems!

as for black light orchestra, the morricone medley is another example of fine canadian disco that didn't get a USA release, but it's another one that you can hear on RadioioDisco!

thanks for writing,

barry walters of http://www.radioio.com/radioiodisco.php

hello discomusic.com people,

i thought i'd reprint here a fan letter i received yesterday about my 24/7 disco internet radio station RadioioDisco:

I want to thank you sooooooooo much for playing true disco! There are many ‘disco’ stations on satelite and Sirius and none of them have got it right. There’s a distinction between pop and disco. Your station has it down right. I’m a major fan and have been collecting disco and soul records of the 70’s for many years. I can still listen to your station and hear music that is unrecognizable (THAT’S A VERY GOOD THING). I keep getting turned-on to many new producers and artists thanks to you.

And, if I have any request at all – it’s this: DON’T EVER CHANGE YOUR FORMAT!!!!!! PLEASE DON”T EVER!!!!!!!!

Just take a listen to that cheesy Sirius disco station ( all 3 minute versions of tried disco/pop – gross!)

Keep playing those fabulous extended original 12” versions of the 70’s. Love each and every single one of them. It’s about time someone educates the generation of today what true disco and soul music is. Never sell-out to “I will Survive” and “Macho Man”..

Keep up the good work. Never heard a track repeated and always different tracks of the giant disco rainbow.

for the record, i DO play plenty of disco pop along with euro/funk/soul/garage/roots/etc., but i aim to do so in a proportion that i think that most newbies and oldtimers alike will enjoy. for my most recent update, i've added about a hundred tracks to my RadioioDisco library of over 3,000 cuts. among these additions are classics, obscurities, superior remix versions and a few sonic upgrades of some radioiodisco favorites. i hope they make the coming weeks that much more festive for all my RadioioDisco listeners.

thanks for reading,
barry walters of http://www.radioio.com/radioiodisco.php

remicks: glad you heard babs' "shake me" right away. i'm playing the promo 12" that doesn't have remixer credits. does anyone have the promo remix 7"? i have a vague memory of seeing remix credits on that pressing, but not the conventional 7".
everyone, thanks again and stay tuned to radioioDisco. your world. your station. no boundaries.

with much love,
barry

Just dug out the 7" long/short promo...no remixers credits on this one at least just Rupert Holmes and Jeffrey Lesser down as producers and arrangers.

hello simon,

thanks for checking out your copy of "shake me" — for some reason i thought that moulton might've remixed it, but the sound quality as remicks wrote is not great, even on the 12", and below moulton's sonic standards.

i asked my friend and fellow writer brian chin (remembered as '80s billboard columnist but also writer of typically eloquent liner notes) if there was any chance moulton remixed it. he replied, "if the vinyl in the lead out groove says 'TM/JR' anywhere, that's confirmation because it stands for Tom Moulton / Jose Rodriguez, who mastered most of Tom's tapes."

marky, i forgot to mention in my last post that i added one of your requests, salsoul orchestra's "my number's up," to my RadioioDisco library.

if you'd like to hear it, drop me an email via the station webpage

http://www.radioio.com/radioiodisco.php

and i'll try to play it if you let me know when you'll be listening.

that goes for anyone who'd like to hear a particular song on RadioioDisco. i may not have it in my station library, but i would like to know what forum regulars would like to hear. if it's something that i only have on vinyl, i'll add it to my "to-burn-onto-CDr" list. it could take awhile to get onto the station, but i'll do my best.

thanks!

Keep 'em coming Barry !!

What I enjoy here is your broad spectrum of what gets played ..... and the surprises that come along the way .
---This morning I was really enjoying your play of a particular cut and wasn't expecting to learn it was The Player's Assoc. TURN THE MUSIC UP . Just never paid it much attention. And right now I'm realizing what a nice sounding piece of music is DANCE A LITTLE BIT CLOSER by Charo !!! (I must've had attitude back in the day) Classic quality Salsoul ...Charo is very subtle on it .

I think the temptation when playing disco is to incorporate/focus on the mix . Since that is not your appproach .....the songs' sounds and tempos can swing enormously ...and one can never be sure what's coming next .....something totally relevant to the previous play ..... or not .
That's one thing about when it's about the "mixing" .... how many songs back then got ignored because the DJs found them too difficult to mix ... or the song just didn't seem to fit in or the recorded sound wasn't right .... or it was by .....Charo !
I love the wide range of sounds you cover .... & particularly the amount of attention given to the earlier years. And also not just surrendering to the sure things... (although they get their turn too). Great place for the novice to get educated ... your programming really makes it apparent the great deal of DISCO music that was released in its brief time on the planet .

thanks

hey remicks,

glad you're still enjoying RadioioDisco!

being that this is a radio station and that every day's playlist is unique, there's no way that i could mix 24/7, even if the technology existed. instead i program sets based around musical and lyrical themes. it is related to what club DJs do, and sometimes i manage to link together two or three songs at a similar or exact tempo, but i also aim to create musical contrasts between the sets i sequence between station announcements so that listeners eager to hear a style different than the one currently playing won't have long to wait. this way, there's some continuity, but also the potential for surprise!

to answer one of your earlier posts about the station, i did add more of motown's disco and danceable '70s soul to my library over the past several months. indeed, i've added more of EVERY kind of '70s and early '80s dance music to my station, and i'll keep adding as much as time permits.

keep on listening to RadioioDisco!

thanks,
barry walters of www.radioiodisco.com (you can also find it on iTunes via the 70s/80s radio listenings, but if you check out my home page you can find the "what i missed" lists that'll tell you most everything i've played over the past couple of days.)
