Hi Marky: You must be looking at the Six Million Steps site - downloadable mp3 version should be online in the next couple of days, I'll keep you posted.

The June '76 programme is always online first at Samurai FM (although only as stream, not download). Click here and you'll find it:

Greg your comments on "Baby brother" brought back a flood of memories, in those years we were doing the Bumb every where crashing neiborhood "Disco" parties every weekend around the city (Miami , FL), :) Hollywood swinging and Jungle boogie by Kool and the Gang along with "Do it 'till your satisfied" are some of the other cuts I remember bumping to. 8)

Do you know if The Real thing recorded their version of "You to me are everything" before Revelation's version ??? (RSO/Polydor)

My Revelation 12" copy also dates back to 1976 but I don't remember exactly when this record was released, I don't think I ever heard Real Thing's version before:o:(

Hi Mixmachine: I'm pretty sure that the version by The Real Thing was the original, although its British songwriter, Ken Gold, did already have US connections - some info here:
http://www.loadofold.com/boots/gold.html

My guess would be that the Revelation single was an attempt to cash in Stateside on the success of the Real Thing's version in the UK - in a similar way to how British acts, especially in the 60's, would rush out covers of big hits by US acts.

Hi again Mixmaster: Just been going through some old copies of Blues & Soul, researching the next Time Capsule, and can confirm that the Real Thing did indeed originally record ‘You To Me Are Everything’. Their version came out in the US on United Artists in July ‘76, where it was relatively successful, going on to reach the top 30 of the R&B chart. There were two other versions issued in the US around the same time – Revelation, as you mentioned, and, just before that, a version by Broadway on Granite Records (neither of these releases made much of an impact). As you’re no doubt aware, the Revelation version was produced by Freddie Perren (Gloria Gaynor, Tavares, The Miracles, Peaches & Herb, The Sylvers, Yvonne Ellimen etc).

Thanks Greg for the great effort with your research, I’m going to double check and see if I own the Real Thing 7” version, I remember finding the Revelation 12” version sometime in the late 70’s and how happy I was but all this years my thinking was that this was the one and only version.
Both versions (comparing with your downloaded version) sound very similar with some extra background harmonizing vocals added to Revelation’s, but the Real thing’s production sounds a bit less “polished” giving it more of an early/mid 70’s Disco ‘underground ‘ vibe I like.:-D

Ps: I’ll add later to the vault the revelation 12” and use some of your findings to keep Disco History accurate.!

Another champion compilation Greg !
Really makes for an interesting comparison with what was happining that same summer in the states….
JUNE '76

1.James Brown get up offa that thing (polydor) **** classic James Brown. ”I like it I like it I like it

2.Michel Polnareff lipstick (atlantic) **** sweet hustle music meets funk .....swirling strings …generously happy instrumental .... (lipstick ???)

3.Crown Heights Affair foxy lady (polydor) *** more of that CHA NY sound …. Hard ass brass ….Exorcist’s TUBULAR BELLS sprinkled throughout on piano ….sort of odd singing about a "FOXY LADY" ,then that eerie horror movie reference plays in ...still works overall though

4.Banbarra shack up (united artists) **** takes me back ….raw “honest “ funk … perfect vocal w/ saucy female backup

5.War me and baby brother (island) ** its good WAR …. Sort of flat though … too even ….

6.Ohio Players who’d she coo? (mercury) ** getting worried about the Ohio Players ….slippin (into darkness ) “ who’d she coo” line wears thin quickly ….and is repeated endlessly front center and back …

7.Kay-Gees hustle wit every muscle (polydor) ** NEW one for me 8) ...nice party atmosphere ...I see why you paired it with the Ohios ..although production is not nearly as nice … very talkative bass …. toward DEVIL’S GUN “ at times ….

8.Parliament mothership connection (star child) (casablanca)*** ( proto type for Kool’s “ladies night “ it even says “if you hear any noise its just me and the boys” ….) …like this twisted song ..wouldn’t get me on the floor though .....

9.Isley Brothers harvest for the world(epic) **** I hope this one appears soon on marky’s chart. The lyrics and vocals are wonderful , but the instrumental “B” side works too … sweet prominent acoustic guitars makes it distinctive …. Summertime in LA 1976 ….I love the kick up halfway through ... if they'd only taken it up yet one more notch yet again ... MFSB style ( Tom Moulton where were you ) .....might've been a monster

10.Impact happy man (atlantic) **** what happened to Impact ? This was great ! Philly /Motown stuff ....One "happy man" here alright ... convincingly happy .... ( well ....he's gettin' it "seven days a week..every day every night " ;))

11.Foxy get off your aahh! and dance (jayboy) ***** Bongos !! lively full-bodied hustle sound with Ish (?) providing an endearingly sweet whispery beckoning delivery of the song's only vocals …. “get off your ahh and dance .....ahhh “ 8)…..

12.Lee Eldred how’s your love life (mercury) ** fun romp ..... mocked remote broadcast recording ... including "live" from the discotheque …..”B” side instrumental includes over the top orgasm sounds

13.Marlena Shaw it’s better than walkin’ out (blue note) ***** except for the occasional tinniness of the horns … perfect disco record … optimism and feel goodness abounds ... no longer remix stifled this one

14.Muscle Shoals Horns born to get down (london) *** Another "new" one .....has nice Gary Toms moments .....sleepy vocals cool the heat though

15.Bryan Ferry let’s stick together (island) * horrid !!! sock in mouth vocals ....not even remotely disco .....

16.Real Thing you to me are everything(pye) **** most exciting find for me on here 8).... as this song begins I was certain thie song was actually NATIVE NEW YORKER by Odyssey ( which was released later ) …. (this arrangement much too similar to be a coincidence ) ... it is " Barry White beautiful" musically ...too bad the lyrics get whiny at times.... ....

17.Brothers Johnson I’ll be good to you (a&m) **** ( I might've followed this with Harvest For The World ) .... & nice woodblocks !!
18.Earth Wind & Fire reasons (cbs) ****
19.Dorothy Moore misty blue (contempo)***
20.Manhattans kiss and say goodbye (cbs) *****flawless studio production

THANKS GREG !!!!

Nice one remiks - really enjoyed your synopsis. Good to get your viewpoint on the music included. i'm glad you find that the programme makes interesting comparison with what was happening in the US at the same time - it was my intention to illustrate things from a UK persective, throwing some light on how, although we were obviously influenced by what was happening Stateside, the UK scene evolved in a different way.

Greg: Great to see some exposure for Strutt....one of my personal faves too. I dug it out for transfer to minidisc just a few months back and memories just flooded back.

Quick question (completely off topic, sorry but it just popped into my head). Did you ever play Rock On (Dance On) by Tony Gregory on Contempo?

Hi Quinny: No, I never came across it - what year? I would definitely have remembered it, if only for the fact it was by someone called Gregory.

Greg: Without the vinyl in front of me I would have had it down for around the same time as the latest mix.......but hey, I could be completely wide of the mark. It was released as a single and appeared on a Contempo compilation called Disco Parrty? It had a rhythm pattern like a mix between Boogie On Reggae Woman by Stevie Wonder and Do It Anyway You Wanna by People's Choice (or even Running Away by Roy Ayers) at around 112-115 BPM (I'm guessing). It wasn't necessarily the best record in the world, but it was massive for me in Mallorca and in the back of my mind I mixed it in with Jesse Green, Nice and Slow (of which I played the grooves out of the instrumental side, NOT the vocal). However, I've got about 10 years on you and those 10 years make a hell of a difference to the fading memory.

looks like you missed the train again quinny, you should get all those unused train tickets on ebay theyre collectable today;-)
the flasher i think of as more a late 75 record, fusion records u.s and REMICKS ill tell you something never mentioned here before this was also a very rare promo only 12"
this actually came out on three different labels in the u.k route, pye and prt
i think the pye release was put out towards the end as it was the last release on route and they were probibly out of labels, the prt was an 80s re-issue, wonder which one quinny got as a cast off
