You are misunderstanding the use of the term "remastered", which is understandable since it's been so mis-used and overused.

"Remastered" does not mean "not sourced from vinyl". Nor does a disc which has not been remastered mean "sourced from vinyl". None of Donna Summer's Casablanca CDs were made from vinyl.

The term "digitally remastered" originally appeared on early CDs, and it was redundant. Being a digital format in what was then primarily an analog world, *every* CD was technically remastered -- you can't press them from LP stampers, after all.

In the rush to get CDs out to market, many record companies did not do their homework on getting the best possible sound. They used whatever tapes they had lying around -- safety copies, LP production masters, etc. Some were noisy, had bad EQ, etc. Over time, many artists wanted the CDs -- which had since gone on to become the primary format -- to be redone using the original master tapes.... thus remastered.

In more recent years, "remastering" generally means crushing the dynamics to make the CD LOUD!!!, digitally removing hiss (the side-effects of which are worse than the original problem) and applying the heavy bass and shrill treble EQ to match contemporary albums.

In the case of Donna Summer's "Bad Girls", there's nothing wrong with the original CD. It was a flat transfer from the master tape. In fact, the new "remastered" version sounds *less* like the master tape, because it's been compressed (albeit not too badly) to make it louder.

I finally got around to ordering the Revanche/Peter Jacques/Macho set from Goody Music in Italy, and I have to say I am very impressed. Ordering was easy - once I found out that I could get the order form in English - and delivery was pretty quick. The set itself is very nicely packaged in a small box with five cardboard sleeves that mimic the original record covers. Two discs (Macho and Revanche) each contain two albums, so the little cardboard sleeves have the front cover of each album on opposite sides. (Too bad for those looking for the back cover of the Macho "I'm A Man" album!)The other three sleeves have the original album front and back reproduced. Tiny type on the backs!

The CDs themselves are quite snazzy - they are black and glassy and look like 12" singles on top and even have printed "grooves". There is a great booklet included with all the credits, musicians, producers, tracks, and times.

The music is taken from vinyl, as is noted in all the credits. It sounds very good, though I haven't listened to every track all the way through. I didn't hear much in the way of surface noise, and there don't seem to be any obvious artifacts from the de-noising. It doesn't suffer from that too-bright sound that often mars tracks lifted from vinyl. They sound about a thousand times better than the vinyl copies that I have in my collection!
The bonus tracks tend to be edits of the more popular tracks, but in some cases they are extended or "disco edit" versions. I have to say that the product is well worth the price, which was just under 50 Euros for discs and shipping to the US.

I sure want them, but I'm terrified of sending money to another country, and allowing my credit card number or checking account number to go to Italy is out of the question. I'll try to find someone here in the U.S. to order it for me, and I'll pay them.

Get an account with American Express or Discover that lets you create single-use credit card numbers, then you never have to worry about buying something from a web site.

I recently got the Macho/Peter Jacques/Revanche/Rudy box set. I've got most of them already on vinyl but had never heard the 2nd Macho LP 'Roll'. I have read on here in the past that it was very rock-orientated & disappointing which I agree with but it wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting; I've heard worse 1980 'disco goes rock' records.:???: (hello Cerrone & Gino Soccio!)

So far I am not having any success with the Goody Music website. (That is, I can't seem to login for some technical reason--and logging in is the ONLY way you can buy from their online store.)

I think for 40 dollars it's a great deal. I really want this boxed set.

My favorite album would probably be a toss between Music Man and I'm A Man.

Sandra Dee: did you order these from the Goody Music office or from Italy? I want the CDs but I'm nervous about sending any money to another country and the "Goody Music" store hasn't returned either of my 2 emails. ???

Sorry, I've only just seen your question ol'skinny! I ordered this fab box set from a seller on e-bay here in the UK. Luckily the price was very attractive. Hope you get it soon.
