No, as far as I know, this movie has never been on DVD.

In fact, the VHS has been out of print for some time.

I would suspect that music rights clearance issues are holding this one up.

A friend burned me a DVD copy from VHS, but the picture quality is questionable.

Anyone have any connections at Sony to get this one out?

You can go to http://videoeta.com/movie/29347 and sign up to be notified if "Thank's God It's Friday" is ever released on DVD. I've used videoeta.com and it works.

Thank's for the advise! I allready signed up at the site for notification if it gets out. It's a pity that the second disco movie of all times (after of course Saturday Night Fever) has not been around for a good time (not even in VHS, the old ones are in bad shape). Perhaps with all this 70's revival someone will remaster it on DVD.

What a coïncidence! Only a few days ago I let a good friend, who works in a giant record store, do a profound research on TGIF and it still is NOT available, even NOT on video.

I'm lookin for it for years but no success. BTW, I know the movie sucks but I want it for the atmosphere.

Yes, that is why my friend made a DVD dupe of it...for the atmosphere.

And don't forget the all-star cast: Debra Winger, Jeff Goldblum, Terri Nunn and of course the Commodores and Donna Summer!

There were others before TGIF - several Italian disco movies were rushed into production immediately after SNF's success. Those were the days now so distant when Cinecitta and DePaoliis still churned out quick imitations of whatever was big - zombies, Roman orgies, lone warriors in Australian outlands, men in white suits.

Are they available? Yes and no - not on dvd, at least yet as far as I know, though it could only be a question of time as lots of Italian comedies are now being realesed, Edwige Fenech stuff, Tomas Milian films etc. Some of the disco epics were available during the vhs era and I quess dusty copies of "Disco King" can still be found if you look real, real hard and spend hours and hours. The best/worst/most distinctive of the whole great/trashy/appalling/entertaining lot is "John Travolto da un Insolito Destino" which starred Ilona Staller, soon to blossom into porn megastar extraordinaire La Cicciolina. The plots of the 6 or 7 made during 1978-1982 were invariably the same - a group of teens, most often played by people in their erarly 30's, decide to enter a dance contest to save their favourite club from greedy investors. Lots of extremely broad, typically Italian comedy situations based on mistaken identities by the expected Commedia Dell'Arte characters would follow: fat husbands, sex-hungry wifes, kooky nymphets etc would wander into wrong bedrooms, step on a banana leafs and fall down in a "funny" manner, and so on. The fashions were invariably the same (beyond description), as were the dance moves. You'll never see any decent dancing at all in these films, just grotesque attempts at copying the tired Travoilta solo dance routines. The Ilona Staller film contained a display of what passed for the hustle, a cranky set of useless steps that had nothing to do with anything. The music consisted usually of "Love Is In The Air", various La Bionda cuts and unidentified Italian tracks. "Insolito Destino" had a great soundtrack with even a Morricone tune in there at one point, which naturally only added to the insane feel of these films, anything could happen at any given point. In addition to the actual disco-themed films, countless sex comedies like "L'Infirmiera", kinky giallo shockers like "Eye Behind The Wall" and action/poliziotto movies contained lengthy dancefloor sequences. Read "Saturday Night Forever - The Story of Disco" for further info - I shamelessly add that the book will come out as another more or less remixed edition later this year, from Random House/Britain.
