Default Don't believe everything you hear

I read on another site that some recordings by famous pop groups (e.g. Mamas and The Papas, Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, Monkees) were actually not the group at all, but studio musicians who came in and recorded background vocals and instrumentation. The only real group vocal was the lead singer.

I suppose it really doesn't matter who sings in the background or plays the instruments, but it is rather deceptive and it was a lot more prevalent than I thought.

I suppose it is deceitful but I always liked the way that groups/artists were 'manufactured' & didn't really contribute much to the records; it isn't as if they're gonna probably benefit financially if they haven't written or produced the music & were probably put together by the producer anyway. That's what i always liked about disco; it was so producer-driven rather than artist -driven. Fabulous - no egotistic artists! :P Just egotistic producers!

I read that the existing "Supremes," at the time, of Diana Ross & the Supremes (Mary Wilson & Cindy Birdsong) supposedly didn't sing on their last #1 hit ""Somday We'll Be Together"....Miss Ross was backed by The Waters sisters...

And I always thought that it was Mary, in deep gospelly tones, saying "sing it pretty now." No. It was one of the Waters (Julia Or Maxine or whichever one it was???)

Mary woulda added a "bitch" to the "sing it pretty now......"
