OK guys, I need your help on this.
I used to buy USA and British magazines to keep track on what was going on in music/movies "up there", by reading "first-hand" reports (i.e. an interview with a musician instead of an article on the musician ripped from these very magazines). The fact that I normally write the latter (but with opinion and a creative point of view, I hope) for Argentina and Uruguay media is really just not important, but it also matters.
OK, due to the economy conditions of my country in the 90's it was easy and cheap to buy those magazines, like the american version of Premiere, Movieline, Rolling Stone, Spin, Details, GQ, Vox, Mojo... Some of them I have a collection (i.e. Premiere) and others I buyed three or four times a year. I found some really good articles on those (John H. Richardson, David Handelman and Lisa Verrico were some of my favorite writers).
Now, as you possibly had heard Argentina is nearly broke and there was a huge jump in the monetary system. So, all imported goods cost about three times as before, or even more (the american Rolling Stone, for example, went from 10 to 28 pesos in four months). By then I already had the web as my main source of information whenever I had to look for something about foreign music/movies (for reading and also to write about them).
The thing is, we tend to use the web mostly to look for something concrete, i.e. the last news on a certain artist. But the other main reason to read magazines is that in going through the pages to read that we are interested on, we find other unknown topics that may raise our interest. That's what I miss from those import mags: to discover new things, flavors of the day/month et al.
So, if you're still there reading this I would be grateful if you suggest web address where I may find that kind of contents. I mean, good, professional pages that don't charge fees to read their stuff (as most known magazines do). My main interests are: black music in general, rock, american jazz, Hollywood & independent film, also fiction and journalism topics.
Thanks in advance, guys. Any suggestion will be welcome.

Nano,

For movie reviews, check out http://www.rottentomatoes.com

A colleague of mine just told me about this site where you can access all kinds of movie reviews from U.S newspapers and magazines.

I was curious to see what they were gonna say about "Divine Sectrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" (a movie I couldn't stand).

The New York Times and USA Today have sites with info from their entertainment sections.

For gossip, Ted Casablanca & Billy Masters (www.filth2go) have columns.

Do a google search for other periodicals on the web.

I'm NOT very knowledgeable about websites, so I'm sure others might have more info.

"USA Today" online ("www.usatoday.com") is definitely good for quick daily updates on entertainment, but you have to check it out on a regular basis. Once an article is archived, you have to pay to retrieve. I think you have about three or four days.

E! Online can be found at "www.eonline.com" and is the the online site for the E! cable channel (Entertainment television). You can find Ted Casablanca's gossip column at this site.

"Entertainment Weekly" magazine's website is also pretty good. Check out "www.ew.com".

For more sites, you might want to check out "www.yahoo.com" then click on News and Media, then Magazines, then Music.

Thanks, guys. Right now the only source for movie reviews I used was IMDB Friday edition of their Studio Briefing (which is good).
I used Entertainment Weekly in the past, it's just that their system has so many windows and clix... I will check the others. I remember Ted Casablanca wrote in Premiere at some time... Quite funny and full of data and star access.
