The winner of the Belmont Stakes today was a horse named Sarava. Yes, same as that little piece of disco some of us might remember.

Can someone give me the correct pronunciation? I always said SA-ra-va. Every announcer today pronunced it sa-RA-va. They mentioned the name is Brazilian but I forgot the meaning.

Thanks and guess who called the winner in his living room? Too bad I don't (can't) afford this wealthy man's sport.

When War Emblem stumbled out of the gate, I knew that his chance of getting the Triple Crown was over. He wasn't able to keep pace with the other horses, especially after the last turn. I wish that I had betted on Sarava because of how much it paid.

Nicky, the former is the correct way. I still remember the commercials on New York TV for the Broadway show "Sarava." It used to say, "Dancing in the aisles is definitely permitted." I'm sure Boodi or Blaxman can say officially.

Hi people, the correct pronounce to "sarav·" is: sah-rah-vah.

It means a hailing word, originated on Afro-Brazilian religions like, "macumba" (mah-coom-bah), "camdomblÈ" (can-dom-bleh).

Peace (and sarav·) to all.

Thanks, Blaxman. I see you have an accent symbol on the last part of the word. So, should I pronounce it sah-rah-VAH? I'm trying to determine which syllable receives the stress. I hope I'm making sense to you. This isn't as easy to explain as I thought it would be.

Yes Nick, in portuguese this symbol means that letter is pronounced strong.

For example:
·=ah
È=eh
Û=oh
Ì=eeh
?-ooh

Peace.

Thank you, sir. Much appreciated. I HATE screwing up another's language. It really puts a bug up my... forget it. Whenever I hear a news anchor say 'Hi-ro-SHEE-ma' instead of 'Hi-RO-shi-ma' I want to throw something at the TV. Don't know where this comes from, but I've got it bad.
