| Ok, my friends I need to use Spanish to explain the difference between "La Chilena" and the bicycle kick. I apologize if that bothers anybody. Perdao Blaxman, o mio Portugues e muito limitado. |

| What about IRELAND!!!! Who needs ROY KEANE? What a finish (v Germany) - long ball up - Niall Quinn inspired diagonal header - Robbie Keane thumps the ball into the goal - WHOAAHHH!!! I think most people in England have a soft spot for the Irish. My wife (she is Polish) was totally disgusted with Poland's performance. After being the one of the first Euro teams to qualify, they threw it away! I mean, only after 30 seconds they punted a long ball towards goal! Well done to Korea, though. Well deserved. Shame after Poland's inspired 3-1 win in Kiev vs Ukraine on the road to qualification - now they look to have thrown all that hard work away  And as for my beloved E-N-G-E-R-L-A-N-D. We still haven't beaten Sweden for 33 years ... I'll tell you what, Nano, we're all getting ready for tomorrow's BIG match... Dunno if we can beat Argentina ... Hopefully we can be inspired by what the Irish have done. Our coach, Sven, has worked with quite a few of your players when he was at Lazio. Didn't see Brasil's first game, Blax, as I was on my way to my street party ...

| I don't see Americans posting for this topic. We are talking about real football, where you play with your feet and a ball. Can you dig it? Anyways, I go for Senegal. It is an amazing team they will end with the hopes of too many who are coming to this worldcup with arrogant hopes. Have a Disco Life. |

| Since I came to the US when I was 2, I'm pretty sure I'm American now. I root for the US second when it comes to futbol, though (it was tough in '94). BTW, did you all see Nigeria in the second half of the Sweden game? Brilliant, fancy individual play: they are demonstrating the "beautiful game" concept better than Brasil has in a long time. Nigeria has been the most interesting team....too bad they will soon be gone. _________________ I'm a goddess, I'm a hooker....I'm a blue movie.... [ This Message was edited by: Boodikka on 2002-06-07 10:19 ] |

| Sweden-Nigeria I couldn't see because it was 3.30 AM, Boodi. But I did see (at 8.30) THAT other match, oh yes, I know you're waiting for this: ENGLAND 1 - ARGENTINA 0 Ah weeeelllll... I knew losing could be bad, what I didn't know was how it would feel to HAVE TO WORK ALL DAY INMEDIATELY AFTER! And with all people around you discussing the game and of course reminding you... Well, anyway: Congratulations to jazz_pilgrim and other Englishmen who wrote here. England won and I'm sure you are happy. Probably you want to know our feelings down here. I will try to resume: Imagine all country stopped to see the game and then, at 10.30, going to WORK! Of course there was discussion about the penalty, and some kind of "dignity relief" (at least on my part) because the goal was by penalty and not by one of those wonderful "corridas" of brilliant Michael Owen. But man, I can tell you this country is pissed off!! But not against the English team, not even against the referee! No no, what came today was the HUGE BACKLASH against our own players and coach Marcelo Bielsa! In less than a week we passed from adoring Bielsa's "thinking" and "strategy" to talk about him as he was an absolute moron. (Typical behavior in this country, by the way.) I mean, we all had seen problems in the Niger game (I mentioned some in an earlier post) but we all kept our mouths shut until today. Now it was all "Bati can't run", "Simeone played walking", "VerŪn missed all passing shots" (well, this last one was TRUE) and "how come Bielsa don't replace this people, stops playing European football, starts playing "toque" (short passing shots with the ball at ground level, the South American way), etc. etc."???? Don't think we don't love this guys. The truth is, may we beat Sweden (3.30 AM on a Wednesday!!!), we'll probably love them again. But right now it seems everybody, everything, is in question. The funniest part for you English people would be to see the loads of TV programs debating the match. I couldn't believe it!! For the first time in many years I saw people discussing strategy with drawings on blackboards, plastic figures, even some stupid toy players ("muŅecos"), moving them to show us how Argentina would have had to play to beat the British defense!!! This is too much, and I watched it in a mix of desperation and laughter for the ridiculousness of it all. Also think a day earlier we were all laughing about the French and how they couldn't make a simple goal in this Cup (really shameful). Now, we are on the verge of being thrown out!!! Another funny thing: the day of the game against Niger, we were all talking about what a difficult team these guys were. Today -after Sweden had them out- it's like that game doesn't count, how come we didn't make 4 goals then, and of course we think England beating them easily is a given. A real storm... Mix the passion for football with our passion for drama (tango is our national music, remember!) and you will have an idea of how we took it. In this country, plus, there's a coach in every citizen. Hope it was not too long. I'm sure you guys were curious. |

Ok, great game England 1 to O Argentina. I think England deserved to win. I'm surprised about the England's play. It's much more skilled than former England's teams. Good surprise! Nano: Sorry about that! But, I think Argentina and England will be qualyfied. Dont worry for while. Peace. _________________ SENHORES DO GROOVE - BRAZIL [ This Message was edited by: Blaxman on 2002-06-10 08:59 ] |

| Thanx, Blax. I'm feeling better now! If you look at the big World Cup games that England have had over the past few years: Argentina 1986 Germany 1990 Argentina 1998 we have always LOST them. So it is nice to actually start WINNING a few of these big games. Now we have beaten Germany and Argentina. So that is why I feel good at the moment ... But, don't worry Nano, I still reckon you'll still be around in 2 weeks' time!!!

| I'm sorry for Uruguay. Probably they weren't better than Senegal, but they're friends of us. Didn't see the game but I hear there was a "fake penalty" in the first Senegal goal, and their third was in off-side. But you know we South Americans are bad losers. Blax, did you see it? Tonight 3.30 AM is the defining game Argentina vs. Sweden. We have to win. No other chance. Phew! |

Anyway, the africans teams are my second option to support in a World Cup. Just for the loose, happy and ingenious game that they play. Easy, friend. _________________ SENHORES DO GROOVE - BRAZIL [ This Message was edited by: Blaxman on 2002-06-11 12:19 ] |
