I agree with you Sutnop; PelČ was a much more universal (meaning all-around) kind of player. Maradona was faster --true-- but PelČ was more skilled handling the ball and a much better team player.

Footbal has changed since PelČ's days but so has since Maradona's days. In relative terms, I think Maradona had to face tougher players but he also had the benefit of world-wide media paying much more attention to him. PelČ didn't have much of that since he only got TV coverage during the '70 World Cup and with a much smaller audience.

Putting that aside, in my opinion, PelČ wins. Maradona may have been faster and maybe even more skillful. However, Maradona became an embarrasment for the sport and tarnished its image considerably. Just look at the guy arriving in Japan for the final; if that is the greatest football player ever, I am switching to basketball!

PelČ, on the other hand, made football a universal sport and gave it a much better image everywhere, including the U.S. Just ask anybody (outside Argentina of course!)
Maradona, with his troubled life, embarrased our beautiful sport. PelČ, with his impeccable behavior, has made it respectable.

Only time will tell of course but I think one of these days Maradona will be found dead of a drug overdose in some lousy hotel room somewhere and, eventually, will be remembered as football's greatest liability and embarrasment. PelČ will forever be football's greatest asset.

Maradona never asked to be idolized or a role model

He just become one
But I have seen detailed documentries of both players...

And the Treatment Maradona got against Opposition they hacked away at his legs

so Maradona developed a new style of running that altough he was kicked down he could keep his momentum up and never loose sight of the ball.....

Ofcourse Pele is a greater Ambassador.

Besides the Argentinaian PEople love MAradona that they will forgive him for anything

Maradona had football imprinted in his genes. Asked the People who played with him or against him.....

Right now his bastard son
Diego Maradona Junior
is being called up to The Italian Under 21 Team

And This guy has just turned 16!!!!

And Italy is one of the biggest football nations in the world so you know they don't have a shortage of players and that he has earned his place their.

If Maradona would make a monthly donation to the Argentinan Sperm Bank. He would solve all the countries problems....
then everybody could raise and make their own little MAradona......

I remember back in Italia 90
when Argentina was playing Italy in the finals and the normally patriotic Italians of Naples couldn't make up their mind on what team to root for
Italy or Maradona
and at the end of the day they were all satisfied......

True he was no Saint
but who asked him to be

Neither was Rick James a saint
or Marvin Gaye for that matter
but they are all great artsits to me.....

Brasil Campeao! Congratulations Brasil! Let me be the first to congratulate all my Brasilian friends for a well deserved championship. Blaxman, Zeca and and everybody else, please enjoy a couple of caipirinhas for me!

Good match; clean, and fair with Brasil clearly superior.

Besides the fact that Germany lost, I am also a bit sad because I'll have to wait another four years to enjoy another world Cup. However, I'm happy it will be played in Germany where, I am sure we'll win!

I'll just pretend Brasil is borrowing the Cup for four years

Brazil won the World Cup? Wow, I'm shocked. Actually, I predicted that they would win since the tournament started. I knew that they had the strongest team, and besides with their history in the World Cup they can never be counted out. Now it's on to 2006, and both of the teams in this year's finals have already qualified. And maybe the U.S. will win it. You never know.

Hi! A little correction Outsider. Actually, only Germany is already qualified as the host for the the Cup in 2006. FIFA changed the rules last year and now even the defending champions have to qualify.

As of today, there is 1 team in the next World Cup and 31 spots available. And I can't wait for qualifying to begin. Meanwhile I'll have to wait for Euro 2004 in Portugal. I love this sport!!!

Well, Brazil is penta-champion. Congrats to Blax, Boodi, Zeca and the lot! I saw the game in a bar and I have to say that I ended rooting for Germany! For me, they played better... But of course, that always occur when a team goes forward and the other backs off waiting for the "counterstrike". Let's say Brazil played like Argentina in 1990 and Germany like Argentina in 2002  Of course this is a generalization: Oliver Kahn was a real fighter and Ronaldo showed class when needed (but where was Ronaldinho?).
Ah, Brazil, laralar· laralar·... I imagine Blax DJing in a "techno" scola do samba and Boodi dancing in her aparment in NYC! Hey, tell us how was your feast, buddies!
About Maradona, I think Sutnop said basically all I could say. Of course Diego is fat and lousy... he doesn't play since 1997 and is retired. I suppose there must be other ex-players with big bellys!
Ricardo, I have to say I'm tired of hearing about this goal with the hand. What about the second goal on that game? Maybe you guys remember Diego running 50 mts. alone, eluding six men including goalkeeper Shilton? So, had the first goal been declared nule, still we would have won 1-0 with the best individual play I had seen in my entire life!
Of course Maradona the man is highly polemic and discussable. Just remember the coke problem happened when this guy had already won all that was disposable. There are dozens of cases like this: look at the lifes of the famous boxers. In Argentina we had many of the kind: people who come from a very poor environment and suddenly they have more than they could desire, and can't cope with it (I think of fighters like Gatica, MonzŰn, or now "Mano de Piedra" Dur·n).
Another thing: once he got busted, Diego never denied his addiction, nor had declared himself cured. "I will be fighting with this for all my life" he says.
Anyway, this is Brazil's party. Long live the good football and jogo bonito!!!

Hey friends,

thanx for your kind words. BRASIL surely deserved to win the world cup - our team always played clean, and there's no denying of the genius of RONALDO - in my opinion, the greatest hero of our victory.

Our people is celebrating a lot here there's a lot of samba and axČ music over BRASIL today. Tomorroy the streets will be flooded with yellow and green shirts, for sure!

When the game was over, I cried some tears of emotion. Our country is experimenting some troubles on the economical and political front, but we proved OURSELVES that we can do better when we have strenght, courage, talent, never forgetting who we are or where we came from - our people live a hard day-to-day life, but we never forget the joy of livin', the joy of music, the joy of soccer.

Let's hear it for the boy: R-O-N-A-L-D-O!

Peace,

zeca azevedo, with 5 shining stars on his shirt today.

I didn't know that. Thanks for telling me.

I sure hope the U.S. gets one of those 31 spots. I also hope that we get to host the 2014 World Cup, which I've heard we're bidding for. That would be awesome.

Well, well, well!! After the celebrating, back to discussion!

Friends (specially Sutnop), what did you say???

If we pick "a frozen" PelČ, he wouldnt play the same way that 30 years ago??????

Yes, I said "FROZEN PEL…" because your theory is ruined here. Dont you think that today we would have a "physically improoved PEL…" ? He's not a lousy man, he is/was a complete athlete!! So, of course his athletic condition would be much better now than 30 years ago!! Dont you think about it???

More: PelČ scored more than 1,200 goals, won 2 Interclub World Championships, 3 World Cups and countless other titles. Who did more??

Please, no more "FROZEN PEL…" theory, ok??

Finally, while some people is thinking like this, we are winning titles, he,he,he!

Peace. (Brrrrrrr, why is so cold here???)

Hi,
BLAXMAN hits the spot here, for sure - the same technology used to improve the performance of the soccer players of today surely would improve PEL…'s talents as well. The fact that the players of today are faster than the players of yesterday does not mean that the players of today are BETTER players than the stars of the past. I'm saying this about soccer, but we can say the same thing about music - this FORUM and this DISCO web site is almost completely devoted to the music of the past. The records of today has better sound fidelity and the artists have more technological facilities than the stars of yesterday - are you understanding what I'm trying to say here?

People today seem to forget easily the big names of the past, seem to forget History pretty quickly - it's a shame. If soccer is THE greatest game around the world today is just because there's lots of people that made soccer big in the past. Enough said about this PEL… thing, I suppose.

One more thing, this time about the final game of the World Cup: I'm quoting a newspaper that said "The final proved a battle of German efficiency and resiliency against Brazilian creativity and individual brilliance." PEL… was the most creative and brilliant of our soccer players - and we brazilian have lots and lots of brilliant soccer players indeed!

Peace,

zeca azevedo, with 5 stars on his shirt today

Hello! Once again, congratulations Brasil.

I just wanted to make a comment about something I saw at the end of the game. I loved the moment when the Brasilian team came together in the middle of the field and prayed together. I also loved the t-shirts many of the players were wearing underneath their jerseys with the message "Jesus Loves You" and "100% Jesus." As a Christian, I was pleased --and moved!-- to see that.

No wonder Brasil won! When you have Jesus Christ behind you everything is possible. Even turning a team that barely made it to the World Cup Finals into World Champions!

Hats off to the Champions! Hats off to the power of Faith in The Lord!
