I actually watched this week's shows and I did see the segments that Mark talked about between Vanessa and Ryan. Granted Vanessa's performance on Tuesday wasn't the best, but she was far from the worst. Plus, I really liked her personality!

Did anybody read yesterday's USA Today (3/12/03)? I should have posted this yesterday but I didn't read it late.

"A big hurray for Clay" By Kurt Jensen

"USATODAY.com voters are achin' for Clay Aiken. A whopping 44% of 4,692 respondents to an online poll think the gangly 24-year-old from Chapel Hill, N.C., was Tuesday's best of 12 finalists on Fox's Motown-themed American Idol. Aiken sang the Four Tops' Can't Help Myself.

And who should be voted off? Rickey Smith, 23, of Keene, Texas, who sang Len Barry's 1-2-3 and got less than 1% of the online vote.

USA TODAY music editor Ken Barnes agreed with the Smith verdict. ''He botched his entrance, and has to be docked another point for singing the only non-Motown song.'' But for his top pick, Barnes favored ''Trenyce's stylish revamping'' of The Supremes' Come See About Me.

The non-musical highlight: Marine Joshua Gracin challenging judge Simon Cowell to push-ups."

So, the article confirms what Jeff and Mark commented about Rickey Smith screwing up his performance! Why, oh why wasn't he in the bottom three???

Actually, those of us complaining, did we actually vote?

Oh yeah, nrg - check out Billie Master's comments about Clay in his latest column at filth2go.com. That should answer your question!

I think Simon shows bias when dealing with the contestants.

He has made weight comments to both Vanessa and Joshua and has made comments about the clothes of some of the contestants. I have never heard him make one comment about Ruben's weight or his clothes. If anyone has a weight problem, it's Ruben.

I get the impression if Simon likes you as a performer, then you are immune from his comments. If he doesn't, look out.

Simon was right when he said that Vanessa isn't the kind of person he's looking for in the competition. He's looking for another Mariah Carey clone. One thing I like about Vanessa is that she has personality. She isn't as boring as some of the other contestants. As for her so-called weight problem, I don't think she has one. So what if she doesn't look anorexic? I'm glad she doesn't. Not all women can look like Kimberly (the blonde one) or Carmen, nor should they. Vanessa was one of my favorite contestants on the show. Anyone who takes on "Bohemian Rhapsody" (like she did in her initial audition) gets my vote. I still think Joshua will win the competition. The only thing standing between him and being named the "American Idol" is if he gets called to duty for the war. People love heroes, and anyone who fights for our country is a hero. And he's a good singer too.

Briefly(?), my thoughts on the March 18 show:

Trenyce, Clay, Joshua, Rickey and Kimberley gave the best performances.

Trenyce had a really glam Miss-Ross-at-her-peak vibe going on, Clay was his usual surprisingly powerful self, and Kimberley started weak but finished with a bang. I'm not a big fan of country music (although the guys are much better looking than most Top 40 stars! ), but Joshua was very good; his voice plus the whole Marine/young husband and father image is going to take him far in this competition.

Ruben was good too, but already every performance is the same, that Luther crooner routine. Blond Kimberly is a hot, vivacious number, but her performance was nothing special.

A few homo favorites got mangled by Carmen and especially Julia. To be fair, Carmen did improve as "Hopelessly Devoted..." progressed, but Julia needed something more than an exposed shoulder to pull off "Flashdance." Like a voice.

Corey--who's still trying to work that bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold thing--did his best El DeBarge imprezzzion. But the lamest performance of the night came from Charles. As Simon said, 80,000 films to choose from and he picks a Michael Jackson number from The Wiz!

This week's casualty: Julia or Charles.

I thought Ruben (who I usually don't like), Kimberley and Trenyce did well. Ruben will probably make the top two.

I wasn't as impressed with Clay or Joshua this week and I hated Julia's rendition of "Flashdance" She's my pick to get the boot.

Do you like having the celebrity judges? I don't think they add anything to the program.

Well. I agree with Jeff's assessment of last night's show.

I think Julia was the weakest last night. Charles continues to fail to impress me.

Kimberly the Blonde made a ridiculous choice for a movie song: "The Shoop Shoop Song" just cause Cher covered it on the "Mermaids" soundtrack!!!! The girl knows how to work a stage, however.

I thought Ruben was most impressive last night. The Luther thing worked on "A Whole New World". He seems like a recording pro. Now maybe it's just because he makes you think of Luther....but he is talented.

Kimberly the Black improved with her "Home" from "The Wiz"...BUT I think that song is way over-rated. (Unless Stephanie Mills is singing it). Too many worlds in search of a melody, me thinks.

The Marine showed his all-out country roots voice for the first time on "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"; Clay was impressive again on his ballad and Trenyce had the balls to attempt to do a Whitney Houston tune. Gladys Knight commended her daring.

The celebrity judge thing is not really working, cause they don't want to be unkind and discourage anyone...but when Gladys praises a voice as unique I think she does know what she's talking about. More so than Miss Paula.

I'm most curious about Simon/Simone's constant championing of Little Miss Carmen....she always seems only OK...yet always gets his nicest comments. Wut up wit dat???? Are they related or is he gettin' payola????

Oh and the tabloids keep saying Simon/Simone is in love with a person with a functioning vagina; NO, NOT a Tranny, either. :P

Ah, another week of "American Idol". Personally, I thought that Clay gave the best performance of the night. I didn't like Julia's redititon of the "Flashdance" song (the original version sucks as well), and most of the other performances were mediocre to okay at best. The song that the blonde Kimberly sang was a remake of an old 60s song, but I guess the rules on song selection the week weren't that strict. By the way, the song that Joshua sung was originally recorded by Aerosmith, who aren't exactly a country act (as in they're definitely not). He just turned it into a country song.

I thought for sure that Julia would get the boot last night, but surprisingly she didn't. But I'm pretty sure that she will be a goner in the next week or two.

This week wasn't disco as originally planned, but a country format.

With the exception of Joshua, none of the remaining contestants were particularly good at country. And I always thought that "Sweet Home Alabama" (which Ruben sang) was a rock song. As to who I think will be booted off this week, I can't say.

By the way, last week Ryan Seacrest joked with Joshua about this week's song theme being disco since Joshua has a country singing voice (which he demonstrated then). I don't think that disco will ever really be a song theme in this show.
