best action - Hardboiled vs Dog Bite Dog? Always thought John Woo's "Hardboiled" would be the best ever action film and impossible to beat until I stumbled upon Pou-Joi Cheang's "Dog Bite Dog/Gau Ngao Gau", made in 2006. This has got to be the most ferocious motion picture in existence. The basic premise has shades of "Danny The Dog" with a child who has been raised in gages in Kambodia and trained as a bare-knuckle fighter growing up to be a animal-like, merciless killing machine. However, "Dog Bite Dog" is from a different planet than the rather mainstream "Danny". The action is relentless, unpredictable and really hits you where it hurts with a bonecrunching impact you'll feel long after it's over and you've dropped from your seat, not quite comprehending what you just witnessed. In addition to the ultrabrutal fights, car chases and shootings there's an unexpected tender love story too. And it's all impeccably lensed, edited and acted. But does the film top "Hardboiled"? |
