You are so right about how much more diverse the talent was in the good ol' days. Add Helen Reddy and the trampy gypsy era Cher to the list .... When does someone get the boot?? *****

| ***** The screaming girls saved Jason . Go figure . But then those are the same screaming girl types that made Bobby Sherman a star ..... They didn't rally behind Michael the same screaming way and Michael looked kind of out of place doing those choreographed UP WITH PEOPLE type numbers against the rest of the remaining star struck "kids" bopping about .... Well, he'll be thirty this year .....They need to cut the age at twenty-five .... hell, Jimmy Webb had already written MacArthur Park (disco fans, see related thread elsewhere on board Against the rest ....Michael looked his age . and so a BIG MISTAKE calling attention to himself by picking a song whose opening lines are : Everytime that I look in the mirror All these lines on my face gettin' clearer ... lil' boppers don't wanna know that ! *******

| Last night was Mariah Carey night so do most of the contestants pick any of her popular songs to sing? No they have to go with the obscure crap that nobody's ever heard of. David Cook--He may be everybody's favorite son, but I thought his rendition of "Always Be My Baby" was awful. Jason Castro Street---Simon liked him last night??? Is he getting soft in his old age? Every song the guy sings has the same wimpy/breathy style. He's only scraping by because the girls think he's cute. Brooke White---I think she would have done better if she had the full orchestra instead of just the piano. |

| Carly Smithson was voted out last week. She sings very well and I thought she's one of the best. She's better than Syesha. |

| I know why this show is slipping in the ratings. It's because people with no talent like Jason Medusa Hair manage to stay on week after week and better singers get kicked off. It's a popularity contest, not a talent competition. The judges should score each contestant and the judge's scores should be combined with the audience votes. |

| So it's down to David and David. No surprise there and David Cook will probably win. |

| What an overblown spectacle to watch....two equally soulful talents caught in the midst of frenzied drama and sensationalism. One wonders if either David feels any regrets for introducing themselves to the world of show biz. I'm thinking now that Archuleta will be the winner. I just don't know how the young guy is going to manage the life ahead of him....a passion for singing thrown into a vicious world of marketing and merchandising with an overbearing father making the decisions. I guess we've seen this a time or two before but my gawd, those innocent sad eyes after each one of his performances tells all.

| I was following the whole season of Idol and was even in a Pool (which I won), so I can't believe I missed this whole thread. I look at AI as a reality show. In reality shows, situations are shaped and formed by producers and perhaps even script writers. And a lot of the performers already have previous record deals, have been on other singing shows, or have basically had a lot of professional training before they even auditioned. I have a feeling that the two David's were annointed long ago. It was just a matter of peeling away the other singers. Castro, if he had been more into the whole Idol program would have been part of the Top 3, but he started to get lazy, so I think the producers yanked him. They don't publish the numbers of people who voted each week for that very reason, I think. The thing with Paula reading the comment for the second performance was very telling. Lets suppose she did write it ahead of time because of the rehearsal, what does that say about the actual live performance? I mean, does it even matter to put your heart into it if the criticisms are already pre-written? Half of the time Randy, Paula and Simon are talking anyway, not paying attention to the performances. I think they gave Archuleta a free ride because of his age. Had he been in his mid 20s, they would have panned him for being repititive and sappy. Look what happened when he tried to sing uptempo numbers. He either forgot his lyrics or came across looking like a clown. He's what you call a one trick pony. Cook on the other hand sounded like an artist in the sense that he was able to perform songs into his 'style'. I don't know how much of it was really him, or how much of it was the producers grooming him. Or if he ripped off other people's arrangements like Chris Daughtry did. But in the context of the American Idol product, Cook was the more appropriate choice for American Idol. It doesn't really matter who was crowned the Idol because both guys will be laughing with their record contracts and other endorsements. Overall, I thought this season was interesting and a little weird. I noticed most of the performers were afraid to leave the stage, and some even had problems moving around on it. Was it because they wouldn't be able to read the teleprompter? :) I look forward to Season 8. Hopefully they can recover from the Paula 'seeing into the future' fiasco. Disco Funk PS Out of all of the guest star performances, I found George Michael's to be the creepiest. I thought he was terminally ill and this song he was singing was his final will and testament. He looked gaunt, and his voice was straining. When the lights came on, he looked a little better, but I just think it was such a bizarre way to cap off the performances. |

| I think David Cook has the greater chance of commercial success. I see pop stations playing his songs. David Archuleta on the hand, I see doing Broadway. He may have a hit album, but I don't think he'll get the airplay in today's tight radio market. Donna Summer---Hopefully the rest of the songs on her album are better than "Stamp Your Feet" which I found rather weak as a lead off single. |
