| ***** Well to whomever goes this week ..... thanks for trying whatever your names were !! Kind of a swirl of similars this year especially amongst the ladies .... all want to be singstresses but not sure any of them really know why . To be "a star" I guess . Did you notice how the judges were having a hard time taking the night seriously .... Well amongst all of the songs of the eighties they had to choose from .... who'd have thought this one by Lionel Richie would be the one to impress me the most ...... and by this particular contestant no less. I found the interpretation really clever .... rather moving : *****

| Doesn't Paula seem wackier than usual this year? Nothing she says makes any sense. |

| Its the annoying wannabees that make watching the tryouts so much fun. The audition parts is one of the favorite parts to watch when watching American Idol. Of course, I also enjoy watching the serious competition. |

| finally a show worth talking about! David Cook - Eleanor Rigby Carly Smithson - Come Together had solid performances but Chikeze stold the show with rendition of "She's A Woman" fun to watch. in the bottom 3 this week: Syesha Mercado David Hernandez Ramiele Malubay Although David Archuleta butchered "We Can Work It Out" I still enjoy having him around. However, he was exposed that he is limited vocally and needs more time to develope. Kristy Lee Cook shouldn't be in trouble because she's the only solid choice for country music enthusists. She does have it vocally... but the judges were slightly over reacting on the arrangement. No pitch problems through the entire performance. It would be a shame if she's let go. I liked Amanda Overmyer's singing style on this track. Simon did mention that he couldn't understand 70% of the lyrics... but so what? I could name a bunch of artists that have had #1 hits. Darnit Michael Johns!!! your song choice of horrible.. he could've chose a better song that wasn't so boring. Same thing for Ramiele Malubay... I liked this girl through the audition process and thought she could've been a front runner... but I think it's too late for her. If she doesn't knock one out of the park soon... the axe should be within 2 weeks if not tomorrow. prediction: David Hernandez should go home. |

| ***** Good review efunk ! hey, you notice they did a 70s week ... then an 80s week then jumped on to Lennon/McCartney week . .. What .... not enough from the 90's to keep going ??Shouldn't that period resonate with more viewers ??? Well I think David's humbling slip probably made him (unintentionally) more endearing.... Don't know why he had such trouble learning one song in a week's time ???? (ironic mis-singing lyrics like Think of what you're saying You can get it wrong and still you think that it's alright) funny thing .... no matter what ... I did still think that its alright ... Ya David Hernandez...he even took a college course about the songs of the Beatles yet the one he chooses : I SAW HER STANDING THERE (isn't a big part of the appeal of that song the Fab Four's harmonizing ...) good choice Hernandez out ... .... if not Syesha Mercado ( she belongs on the Disney channel ) ******

| Why did I know David Hernandez would be off the show this week before he even did his song? His performance was cringe-worthy but this was pretty predictable. I was really looking forward to hearing him sing "I was a male stripper in a go-go bar"!

| I thought Kristy's country version of " 8 Days..." was awful. I liked David Archuleta in the beginning, but sometimes he sounds really nasal. It's back to stripping in gay bars for Miss David Hernandez. |

| ***** A little pontificating on Kristy Lee Cook's countrified version of EIGHT DAYS A WEEK . The week prior on American Idol, the judges ( Simon particularly) had told Kristy that in country music she had found her niche and that it should be her vehicle for success in the competition . This week they slammed her for doing just that ...taking A Beatles song and switching it up country big time. Simon was horrified . It was as if she had soiled some untouchable holy grail , how dare she take such a Lennon/McCartney classic and turn it not only country .... but downright hillbilly. The perfect thing about it was that it so easily became country ...a lot of country songs are based on a clever twist of a phrase like sleeping single in a double bed ..... or, she's acting single, I'm drinking doubles .... so singing about loving someone eight days a week ...what a clever sentiment .....has a very country bent . This bias of thinking some genres of music superior to others in the minds of many is nothing new to fans of disco . But the truth is all songs can jump categories and become something else quite easily . Its all in the proper treatment , the re-arranging. A classical piece by Beethoven can become disco .... An Aerosmith song like WALK THIS WAY can become rap ..... LAYLA can be performed fast or slow . Its nothing to be perturbed about when one genre raids the songs of another. Where would todays hits be without it ! Somewhere around 1980 it became clear to me that virtually ANY song could be made disco ( I think it started to be apparent with Linda Cliffords rendition of BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS ) You can truly take any song ...(including any from the Beatles catalog) put an incessant four/four pounding under it and wha-la : DISCO ! I call it the Viola Wills syndrome. Its not really so much about his not liking Kristy's interpretation of EIGHT DAYS A WEEK that bothers me about Simon but rather his lack of appreciating that she more than anybody else that week , took an old stale Beatles song , spun it around 180 degrees and served it back up as totally her own. Like Amii Stewart once did with Eddie Floyd's KNOCK ON WOOD . ********

Simon...although I agree with him most of the time. He's getting to be like a broken record with his "that was so cabaret/cruise ship/lounge act" comments with so many of the contestants. |
