Default Oscars

Even us patrons of arthouses and dedicated collectors of the Criterion line of distinguished dvds (those Marquerite Duras films, Jean Vigo masterpieces...) that we are here took notice of the Oscars this year, did we not? It was such pleasant news that Martin Scorsese finally got one of those statues - even if the Hong Kong film "The Departed" was based on was actually an equally if not more accomplished affair. Also, most seem to agree that Helen Mirren (of "Galigula" and "The Hussy" fame) and the rest deserved theirs. And what was so good about this year was the fact that Ennio Morricone got honoured, so there was a Disco Connection to the show too in a way and a link to all those twanging giallo and italowestern soundtracks that resonate in the forthcoming Tarantino-Rodriquez film, just like they did in "Kill Bill".

Default Re: Oscars

The Oscars are so important to our television stations that not one of the public broadcasters aired them So, I wasn't able to view the award for best actress without a panty and other great stuff like that (Quincy Jones).

Great to see Marty finally win coz' it was a damn shame he didn't get anything over all those years. Just like my hero Pacino had to wait for so long. It's great to see that maestro Morricone was rewarded or I would have filed an official complaint (a chopped of horse head on the porch is still impressive) to 'em for blatantly neglecting Italians.

Of course I'm disappointed that Etheridge got away with best original song while I would have voted for Prince's "Happy Feet". (who wasn't even nominated whilst he was awarded the Golden Globe).

I'm just mad that my good buddie Borat didn't win with his moviefilm.

Best of 2006: "The Departed" + "Borat" + "Casino Royale"
Overhyped: "Dreamgirls" + "Miami Vice"
Worst of 2006: "An Inconvenient Truth" + "The Wicker Man" + "Basic Instinct" + "Superman"
