What I object to, is what has effectively been an ongoing campaign for the last 22 years to rewrite musical history, with disco conveniently purged from the records (pun not intended). I would much rather buy a nice CD reissue of an LP instead of spending a week on digitally editing out all the pops and clicks. If there's not enough demand for this sort of music to be commercially issued, then why are they so concerned about piracy of it? I have over 1200 CDs, and I would love to add to that with replacements for my beat-up second-hand vinyl. But I am not given a choice in this matter. I also object to the notion that I can't make backup copies for myself of any of the new digital media formats. The industry just didn't learn from the DivX experience -- people will not buy something that they are not allowed to do what they please with. And this isn't relevant to you, but as a Canadian, I really object the surtax (scheduled to increase again in the new year) that the music industry got slapped on *all* digital media. I pay for this on every CD-R, MiniDisc, DVD-R, etc. that I purchase, regardless of whether I am using it for legal purposes or not -- or if I'm even using it for music! This amounts to the music industry getting money for doing absolutely nothing except whining. |

What is the surtax on a CDR at $.30 CDN? F*** ALL. Don't tell me that you wouldn't milk it for all it's worth? Would you release a reissue with the intent of loosing money or at best re-couping your investment 5 years later (if at all). If you're so good at cleaning up old discs, why don't you re-issue them? That way you might find out why some things are best left alone. Records are about making money. If anyone tells you different, they're having a laugh. A business survives only if it makes a profit, otherwise it's adios amigo. I'm sorry, but you are sooooooooo naive.

The reason I'm for file sharing services is so that I can discover new music, especially from obscure artists where it's impossible to hear them otherwise. If I like what I hear, then I would buy the albums from those artists, but I'm not going to buy an album if I haven't heard anything from it. It makes perfect sense. I miss Napster the most because they had a Mac version.

You can't possibly miss what you've never had. Do me a favour and grow up. To put another spin on it that's cliche ridden You want your cake and to eat it? Do me a favour and grow up.

In most countries, getting money for doing nothing is called Welfare or The Dole. In Canada, it's called being part of the music industry. Hmmm... perhaps I should start my own label, release one single, and then try to get my share of the cash by claiming that MP3s caused my business to fail. Quote:

Graham: A CDR costs about $.30 CDN so the surcharge on it is absolutely diddely squat. Man buys house for $100,000 CDN in 1980 sells house for $400,000 in 2000. What has he done to earn that!!!!!!!!!! The world goes round 'cos fat cats in all industries and all professions make big bucks for doing absolutely sweet FA. Isn't Cananda part of the capitalist west? Just because a record is out of print doesn't mean that no one owns the intellectual rights to the material. Do you expect a facimile car from '77, a facimile fridge. Get my drift? You're just acting like a spoilt child and your arguments are completely in line with that. Your just pissed 'cos there's something you can't have. Another thing. Let's say you have a car that you don't use for whatever reason. Does that give anyone the right to take the car and start using it or worse still, start making money by driving it. You'd want your cut wouldn't you or get the guy locked up for theft? You own the car, therefore you have the absolute right to say how it is used and by whom. If you decide to just leave it 'cos you think it may be worth some money to you one day, who could object. Who could force you morally to make it available to someone who wanted it? There, is that debatable?

I was going to write another long rant about how just because something is acceptable doesn't mean it is right, but... I realized that you're only trying to get me all riled up. You just love seeing people get all emotional; there is no other rational explanation for your behaviour.
