I totally agree dk. Miss Doolittle alternately evoked the voices of Natalie Cole & Chaka Khan at times--yet seemed quite original in her approach to the song. This is one of the "timeless" tunes discussed elsewhere. RICHARD RODGERS & LORENZ HART, KIDZ!!!--from the THIRTIES!!! I know Chaka did this on the "Waiting To Exhale" soundtrack...I have to go listen again to see if Melissa's "phrasing" was lifted from that...but nonetheless, she was SMASHING!!!

We get another 4 hours tomorrow - the boys, then the girls then the results show. I liked Melinda from the auditions, Lekisha is just fantastic - as for the boys - well so far no-one has really caught my eye (or ear). The annoying thing about our show is that a UK presenter - Cat Deeley, interjects and 'interviews' the contestants. It gives it more of a UK feel which is not something I particularly enjoy.

I thought she did that in the States too, so I don't think we're getting a Brit special, so to speak. She's one of the few Brits to have made a name for herself on TV over there.

the guys went back to their original week 1 boring & bad performances... Chris Richardson and Chris Sleigh were the only ok performances this week, the rest were crap.

The girls tonight will be intense... I don't see any of the guys getting inside the Top 5 this year.

The guys on Idol this year are sorely lacking....so different from last year's roster of talent (Taylor, Chris, Elliott, even Gideon who didn't make the top 10...). I've been reading reviews and opinions about how special the overall mix of Season 5 performers were and how they are missed this year. I see that too. They all seemed to have had interesting qualities to them that don't seem to be showing in this year's pool of performers. I really can't see any of the guys getting into the top 5.

I think Melinda Doolittle is the one to beat as far as talent goes. She's miles ahead of everyone else. I can tell with just her song choices alone that she is looking at every angle of the competition...choosing familiar tunes where she can be adventurous and unique. I loved it last night when she sang out "I don't think you heard me back here that I'm a woman...W-O-M-A-N"...excellent!

I don't know if she's really what you'd call American Idol material though. She's much too mature and professional to be promo'd now to American radio....er....maybe I should re-word that.... Her music wouldn't be that appealing to younger audiences and hopefully, when it comes to her first cd (or download series? ), they won't throw her voice over some hip-pop beats singing about how her hips don't lie.

They never should have upped the age to get on . These late twenties people are too old ..... bunch of geeks .....wind up with Taylor Hicks etc. ... and Melinda's "Golly gee....really, me ?" act needs to end now too .

That one guy .... the bald one with one thin ear sticking out of his hat ...... isn't he "batboy" from the cover of those supermarket tabloids ??

I thought the fat "Elton John" guy (Chris?) had the best male voice ( the best of not much ) and LaKisha again of the girls ...maybe those two will be the top two !! American Idol ... brought to you by Coke , Cocoa Puffs , and Taco Bell ! Ya that's about right .

Sort of takes the umph out of the tearfully devastating, life-ending impact of learning you've been booted off of American Idol because you're a shitty singer ... when right in the middle of the cuts they segue over to a clip about the despair of thousands of starving children in Africa .

Other than that : fun show !!
