Movie Flops That You Liked

Did you ever like a movie that flopped at the box office or had a limited release?

I enjoyed "Domestic Disturbance" and "Don't Say A Word", but I don't think either one of those movies was a big box office hit.

Yes..I really liked Steppin' Out with Liza Minnelli and the music was terrific in it too, a must have for any fan....too bad it bombed; but the nineties have not been kind to poor Liza and now she has David (rich poor Liza)

I also liked Showgirls.....and I found I am not alone....except maybe in this Forum :lol:

and i really liked Just The Way You Are, with Kristy McNichol - where she pretended to have a broken leg so she could meet some attractive guys at a ski resort (Michael Ontkean)...I never see that on DVD either....

I really liked the movie version of "Bonfire of the vanities".
Also think "Mother" by Albert Brooks is one of the best American movies of the Nineties.

Danceman I really liked 'Steppin Out' too! Julie Walters was also good as well as Liza I thought.
Was Michael Ontkean in the TV series 'Twin Peaks'. If its the one I'm thinking of I always found him very attractive.

To answer the question, I recently saw a strange film called 'Chuck & Buck' about obsessive crushes. I dont think it was big budget as it,in a way, took the piss out of Hollywood (not really an original idea I s'pose but nevertheless entertaining & funny.)

SHOWGIRLS. This dubious taste epic is notably among John Water's all-time faves, so do give it another change.
From the other end of the spectrum, CATTACA with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. Possibly with the best designed sets since Bava's DANGER: DIABOLIK and a hauntingly beautiful sci-fi allegory. One apparently gets maybe 3-5 American movies each year playing the Sony-or-whoever-owned multiplexes that actually can be called Films and Cattaca was one.
This year: Caspar Noe's IRREVERSIBLE - too vicious, too uncompromising and too personal for wide audiences
Pitof's VIDOCQ - bizarre historical horror adventure with Gerald Depardieu, huge hit in France but badly distributed elsewhere
Brian dePalma's FEMME FATALE - style over content, one staggeringly violent and erotic setpiece after another, long legged lesbians arrange a diamond heist, gorgeous interiors, fashions etc.

Ah yes, but that one has become such a camp classic that I think it has become successful in its own right. Such immortal dialogue!

Jussi: actually the movie is called "Gattaca". I also liked it (probably the best role on Jude Law's short career). And FYI: Gaspar NoÈ lives in France, but he's actually from Argentina
Can you tell me a bit more about "Femme Fatale"? I'm a De Palma fan an still can't figure about that movie. Is that "Murder a la Mod", his first thriller, made in the late Sixties after the "Greetings" series?

Hey! I just found in IMDB that "Femme Fatale" is Brian's new movie, set to release in November in the U.S. However, the Argentina release date featured in the site is not correct (it has no release date yet down here).

Yes, FEMME FATALE is the new one and great to know it's getting more engagements than originally planned. Last spring the film was deemed nearly unrealisable by the distributors who thought it was too stylized, too strong and too uncommercial for territories such as America. Luckily FEMME shot up to number one box office in Paris in May. Should the film come out with an R rating in the USA they can probably expect a censored edition, as there are definitely more than just the 3-5 pelvic thrusts that the rating allows during the full frontal sex scenes...

Caspar Noe has a huge cult following in Europe. IRREVERSIBLE was THE scandal this spring in Cannes, it got people standing up screaming "MALADE!!" - sick - during the admittedly hard to watch rape sequence. Yet half of the premiere audience clapped furiously when the film was over and they were able to catch their breath. Good old Caspar originally wanted stars Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel to do a h/c film...Check out the director's merciless CARNE and SEUL CONTRE TOUS as well for more truly original, dangerous filmmaking with a healthy "fuck hollywood" attitude.

I liked MARS ATTACKS by Tim Burton! Unbelievable, uh? The film was destroyed by critics and it bombed on the box office, but it's entertaining and fun, at least for me. That yodeling song that kills martians and the ending with Tom Jones are really beyond kitsch! Wild stuff.

Zeca, I also liked "Mars attacks!". My biggest laugh in the movie was at the beginning, with that old woman with Alzheimer... When I realized who was she longing for! :lol:
My mother had been recently diagnosed with Alzheimer at the time and I remember having thought my sense of humor had reached a limit... until I saw that scene!
The other big scene for me was when Jack Nicholson try to convice the alien that it's good to do a deal with the U.S. President... By now Jack can do that stuff in his sleep.

Hey Zeca. I loved "Mars Attacks" too. Too many scenes to pick like for example, when the martians sucked up the nuke like they were taking a hit off a bong :lol:

well, it's good to see that I'm not alone defending MARS ATTACKS. One of the most impressive things about the movie is its star studded cast: JACK NICHOLSON, GLENN CLOSE, ANNETTE BENING, DANNY DEVITO, PIERCE BROSNAN, SARAH JESSICA PARKER, MICHAEL J. FOX., PAM GRIER, TOM JONES, NATALIE PORTMAN, MARTIN SHORT, ROD STEIGER, TOM JONES, JOE DON BAKER and BARBET SCHROEDER. Impressive cast, uh?

Another great scene from this underrated sci-fi pastiche: PIERCE BROSNAN and SARAH JESSICA PARKER's decapited heads rolling and kissing each other - wild stuff!
