Ever been to a greek wedding? Not like the one in the movie "big fat wedding" but a REAL greek wedding. Let me fill you in.
We'll take the "not so hardcore" option where the couple gets married in the city and not at the bride's village as the custom dictates.
After the ceremony at the church (not many couples go for the city hall thing because if they don't get married in the church there's a good chance some priest will deny baptising their kid later in time) there's always a big party with food etc.
The playlist has to include something that everybody can identify with - the bride's relatives from some island or the groom's relatives from some mountain or their "hip" friends from work - Soooo, they start with some traditional stuff (like what we used to hear when we were fighting the Turks 200 years ago) and then go on to some popular "laika" and then some (OMG!) disco (Stayin' Alive etc) and then some current popish techno-oriental shit.
The worst of all is having to say hi to everyone and smile when they wish you "kai sta dika sou" which means "at yours too" (at my wedding??? yeah right.....)

Nano, you speak of our proud, young nation as if we were some kinds of dregs of humanity, degenerates licking around and salivating horribly ! Quite the opposite, though it must be stated that our former minister of culture Mr Jˆrn Donner did appear in a film during his youth in the early 70's sporting an erection. Things are different now, even our president, Mrs. Tarja Halonen, a former single mother, political activist and ex-leader of the gay&lesbian association, did eventually get married and joined the bourgeois. Now, that traffic cone thing could make for a nice party game for wedding guests, no? I'd spin Russ Abbott: ATMOSPHERE, followed by THE BIRDIE SONG and lots of Demis Roussos, not wanting to upset the kids, aunts and uncles.

Be cool guys... you don't have to tolerate "Disco Samba" by Two Man Sound at EVERY fuckin' wedding party like me!
I've already told this tale, but let me tell it again. "Disco Samba" (released around 1978) is a "Stars in 45"-style blending of Brazilian samba tunes... that is, not the originals, but as played by this touristic samba combo (I believe they're from Holland!). Lasts a complete LP side, around 20 endless minutes long. (From that time I also remember "Caribbean disco show" by Lobo, the same concept on Latin Caribe dance tunes.)
OK, in Argentina it became common to stage a special section in wedding parties called "Carnaval carioca". Someone passes Carnival masks and hats, pitos (the ones used by referees), cornetas (hand honks), confetti, etc. to all guests. Then, whatever is being played sinks in and "Disco Samba" comes out, ALL 20 MINUTES OF IT, while people blow their pitos and throw thin threads of paper into the air, pretending they are very happy!
I remember Blaxman laughed a lot with this story. I told about it to a Brazilian lady and she went nuts... Couldn't believe we pacific people of Argentina could be TORTURED that way by local wedding etiquette...
