As you probably know by now, legendary Los Angeles Lakers play-by-play announcer Chick Hearn died yesterday (he was 85 years old). He never regained consciousness after two operations to stop the swelling in his brain due to hitting his head from falling in his yard last Friday. It's hard to imagine a Laker game without his commentary, as he was the best announcer ever. Until last December (when he had heart surgery), he hadn't missed a game since 1965, calling a record 3,338 consecutive games. And while he used many famous phrases in his commentary, he said his most famous one when the Lakers were about to win a game:
"You can put this one in the refrigerator. The door's closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard, and the Jell-O is jiggling."
Chick is an institution in not only the Lakers, but basketball in general. Laker games will not be the same without him.
