I'd say that the old school rap ends in '83 with "The message". After that track everything changed

I saw Grandmaster Flash on the John Walsh show, and he said that song ruined his life :-?

Did things change for better or worse? I think they got better:
"Sucker MCs" Run DMC
"PSK What does it mean" Schoolly D (from his fantastic 'Saturday Night' LP)
"Freaks Come Out At Night" Houdini

Things got a bit silly towards the end of the 1980s with Gangsta rap and the Ghetto Boyz  Guy's like Ice T and Ice Cube had real things to say, but rappin' about pussy like Too Short and Co. didn't appeal to Buckaroo Back In The Days When Hip Hop Began.

Enough.
