As for late 60's MUSIC, as this is supposed to be a MUSIC thread, these are the soul and pop things I can remember being danced to from the time period:
1) The Horse - Archie Bell and the Drells
A question for our Goddess:

I remember "The Horse" by Cliff Nobles and Co. Did Archie & Crew cover this version or is this a... "horse of a different color"? (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

As for pre-disco euro stuff, clubbers on the continent stepped to fluffy Italian or French bossa novas, the real thing from Brazil, cheesy mor psychedelia sweetened with sitars and strings, pop hits by the likes of Mina, Patty Pravo or Adriano Celentano, afro-influenced hybrids of all sorts and most importantly, Yé-Yé hits from France. The biggest players on the late 60's Yé-Yé scene were the still active Johnny Halliday, France Gall (of the later Dancing Disco fame), Claude Francois ( of the Magnolias Forever disco hit ), the iconic Francoise Hardy and Sheila (yes, That Sheila). The Yé-Yé sound was more swinging Gallic pop than rock, often with big band and percussion elements two steps away from Bimbo Jet. Do check out these Gallic go-go records for something different and curiously groovy. France Gall's giggling "Zoi-Zoi" or a bit of Michel Legrand will be perfect for dancing wildly at your next aprés-ski foundue party.

In addition to all the other fine songs listed, I will ad "Funky Nassua" by Beginning of the End.

In 1965 Christophe did a twist calledLes Marionettes. Christophe utilizes in this song a quick violin and he has a delicate voice like some male disco singers (Love and Kisses, Erotic Drum Band, Lightning). Sometimes I think I'm listening to a disco music when I listen to "Les Marionettes" by Christophe, only in my mind.

While searching for something cool to buy for .25c in a thrift store, I came across a record on a label called Spectrum.

The Artist Billy Sha-Rae and the song Do It
from 1971. I wanted to add this record to the list of pre-disco era. Does anybody remember this song?

Hey Marcio,

I'm glad you've mentioned LES MARIONETTES, by Christophe, I love this song! And you're right, the string arrangement for LES MARIONETTES sound like DISCO. I never did this connection before, but I think you hit the spot here.

Default Boogie In Rio!

Hi Paulo & Blaxman, As your from Brazil are you old enough to have been part of the Black Power Music movement in mid 70's? Were you getting down to the likes of Toni Tonardo, Cassiano, Tim Maia, Os Diagnois, Os Devanois, Copa 7, Grupo Arembepe, Quinteto Ternura, Hyldon, Dafe, Helio Matheus, Wando, Banda Black Rio etc etc...
Would love to have visited a disco or gafiera party in Rio in the mid 70's.

Mark Taylor
