| Anyone see this new special on their local PBS station? It aired Saturday night here in LA. Patti LaBelle hosts. Taped in Atlantic City over two nights. The numbers televised were: LADY MARMALADE - Patti LaBelle DISCO INFERNO - The Trammps (feat. Earl Young) ALWAYS AND FOREVER - Heatwave OVER THE (TOP) RAINBOW - Miss Patti Pledge break ROCK YOUR BABY - George McCrae (flown in from Amsterdam) RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM - Maxine Nightingale SHINING STAR - The Manhattans (Feat. Gerald Alston & Blue Lovett) BETCHA BY GOLLY WOW/ YOU ARE EVERYTHING/ YOU MAKE ME FEEL BRAND NEW - The Stylistics (from Weymouth UK)--not the real lead singer--Russell Thompkins, Jr....so a disappointment. Pledge break AIN'T NO STOPPING US NOW - McFadden & Whitehead IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW - Harold Melvin's Blue Notes (No Teddy P Or Harold M, obviously) NATURAL HIGH - Bloodstone BEST OF MY LOVE - The Emotions--(the lead singer looking like a deeply tanned Ethel Merman!!!) HAVE YOU SEEN HER - The Chi-Lites Feat Eugene Record Pledge break OH GIRL - The Chi-Lites feat. Eugene Record BRICK HOUSE - The Commodores IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU - Yvonne Elliman HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL - Tavares WE ARE FAMILY - Debbie & Joni Sledge ( Sister Sledge) If you cough up a $250 pledge you get a bonus 80 minutes of numbers not seen on TV.......they teased with clips of.... YOU ARE MY FRIEND - Patti COWBOYS TO GIRLS - Intruders TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME - Tyrone Davis BOOGIE NIGHTS - Heatwave STONED LOVE -Jean Terrell (of the post Ross Supremes) I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM - Yvonne Elliman LEAD ME ON - Maxine Nightingale DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY & THE LOVE I LOST - Harold Melvin's Blue Notes ARE YOU MY WOMAN - The Chi-Lites HOLD BACK THE NIGHT - The Trammps JUST TO BE CLOSE TO YOU/ SWEET LOVE/ NIGHTSHIFT - The Commodores LOST IN MUSIC - 2 Sister Sledge IT ONLY TAKES A MINUTE/ MORE THAN A WOMAN - Tavares Most everyone sounded pretty good---some of the lineups obviously have changed.....but it was fun. Especially good: George McCrae...Eugene Record...The Manhattans....Bloodstone...The "Mermed" Emotions... Maxine Nightingale...Heatwave..... Some GREAT voices in there.....what ever happened to GREAT VOICES????? Don't nobody go to church, no mo????

| I recently caught a replay of this show on my local PBS station. Most of it was pretty good except the fact that alot of the groups included live requests for PBS pledges during their performances. Regarding the Stylistics, while the lead singer was not Russell Tompkins, the guy that did his parts was actually pretty good. It sounded just like him to me. Alot better than the guy who attempted to hit Johnnie Wilder Jr.'s high note on 'Always and Forever'. I thought George McCrae was especially good along with Bloodstone and The Chi-Lites. Maxine Nightingale looked really good considering it's been twenty-five years since her only hit. Do you know why there were only three Tavares Brothers there or two Sledge Sisters? Just curious. Overall a pretty good special considering what you got for free. Easy, Sam "ALL JAM" |
