| I've taken this from Blues & Soul Mag website: "VARIOUS (Universal) ORIGINAL FUNK LP SERIES Aficionados of antique soul and funk will discover a cornucopia of riches awaiting them in the form of the 15 mid-price CDs that comprise this exciting new reissue series. Each album, remastered at audiophile 24-bit resolution, is presented in an attractive digipak gatefold cover complete with pertinent new liner notes. On the downside, there are no bonus tracks. However, it's extremely pleasing to have these titles available on CD at last even if some of them hardly qualify as funk in the purest sense of the word. The undoubted pick of the bunch is Gloria Scott's 1974 LP, "What Am I Gonna Do," produced by Barry White and featuring the classic rare groove, "(A Case Of) Too Much Lovemakin'". The same year, White also helmed Love Unlimited's third album, "In Heat", including the vocal trio's chart topping US R&B smash, "I Belong To You". Manifestly funkier are classic oldies by The Bar-Kays ("Propositions"), Southside Movement ("Moving South"), Con Funk Shun ("7"), Hamilton Bohannon ("Summertime Groove" including "Let's Start The Dance"), Cameo ("Ugly Ego") and Mandrill ("Just Outside Of Town"). The Gap Band's eponymous 1977 debut offering is worth singling out for the combustible funk workout "Shake." Kool & The Gang are represented by one of their later albums, 1982's "Something Special," featuring the perennial dancefloor favourites "Steppin' Out" and "Get Down On It." Carolyn Crawford, whose career began at Motown in the 1960s, has her second Mercury album, 1979's "Nice And Soulful" reissued. Drummer Buddy Miles' "Them Changes" also gets a new lease of life. But especially noteworthy is the 1979 album by Al Hudson's One Way, which includes the popular tracks "You Can Do It," "Music," and "I Am Under Your Spell." A bona fide jazz-funk gem is "A Tear To A Smile," by vibes maestro, Roy Ayers. It features the classic tracks "2000 Black" and "Time And Space." Those who like psychedelic funk will appreciate the reissue of "Face To Face With The Truth" by The Undisputed Truth featuring "Ungena Za Ulimwengu," a brooding eight-minute masterpiece conceived by Norman Whitfield. Whether your favourite tipple is uncut funk, smooth soul or glitzy disco, you should find something of interest here. A glorious series. (CW)" Now I have to start to save some money to buy all these ear-candies... zeca azevedo :D |

| Does anyone know what Gap Band's 1st LP is like? 'Baby Baba Boogie' is one of my all-time faves but I dont like much of their subsequent stuff; I just wondered if the rest of the LP is like 'BBB' or not.

| I'd like to know too. Think I never saw it on any format. And "Shake"... wasn't that a 12"? I had it credited as made in 1979 on a CD compilation, and always assumed it was from the "Gap Band II" sessions. "Shake" is a great track, BTW. If the rest of the record is like that...

well, I have 2 albums by LOVE UNLIMITED on CD (their first and their last) and 2 compilations, and let me tell you, I love them all. BARRY WHITE did some of his best work with the girls (don't get me wrong fellas, I'm talking about music here  ) I will try to buy this new CD by LOVE UNLIMITED. Since they recorded only a few albums, I'm wanting to buy their complete discography. Peace and love unlimited for you all, zeca azevedo |
