australia has a history of releasing some really interesting and obscure u.s releases more so in the 60s than the 70s in fact it probibly comes in next to england[canada aside] although all european countries have their surprises. australia released some amazing northern soul sides many of which never even got released in england!and are big money records,anyway skipping over that and on to the 70s it has come to light[well actually its been known a while,but people dont talk about it hoping to find a copy before its world news!] that a record talked about here before GLORIA SCOTT "[A CASE OF] TOO MUCH LOVEMAKIN" gained a casablanca 7" release in 74 in oz! with no 7" release in the u.s or the u.k and even the u.s album selling for $200 dollars this puts this at the top of australias most wanted and a BIG reward [squillions] will be offered for this should one come up for sale.
other 70s to look out for BROWN SUGAR "THE GAME IS OVER" on capitol[76],well in demand with no u.k release and american copies expensive and drying up fast.
finally one that even reached 22 on the oz pop chart in 79 DOUG PARKINSON-ILL BE AROUND on festival with his version of the spinners classic and pretty similar too,a really good version i think most people actually think hes black though,it used to sell for a lot more but i think a lot have now come out of oz now, the last one i saw on e.bay was $75 but on a good day youd get $100 so get hunting funky and other australian members and if you do find gloria scott offer it to me and ill give you the pick of my kylie collection :lol:

Hi Mr DISCODISK, thanks for the tipoffs. I'm not familiar with the first 2 artists you mentioned but I'm DEFINITELY familiar with Doug Parkinson. I've downloaded the mp3 of "I'll Be Around" off KaZaA. That song charted really well in Australia and he DEFINITELY performed that song on Countdown in 1979 and I have the episode on video too :D ! I should be able to come across this record somewhere in the Salvos or the Dapto markets or other op shops around the Illawarra. Speaking of Doug Parkinson he also did a disco cover version of "Everlasting Love" in 1975 which sounds EVEN BETTER than Carl Calton's disco version. And it charted well that year on the Aussie charts too. Doug would definitely have performed "Everlasting Love" on Countdown in 1975 but unfortunately that episode doesn't exist in the ABC archives anymore :cry: :cry: :cry: as many early Countdowns were bulk erased and re-used for other shows :cry: . I do have his "Everlasting Love" performance on the Paul Hogan Show 1975 :D . Doug Parkinson is definitely white and he has an unusual looking facial hair growth style on his face.

I'll keep an eye out for those other artists you mentioned too. I'll even look them up on KaZaA or search for them through google.

thanks for the info funky would like to see doug parkinson on countdown but from the sound of it maybee not as it might put me off what is a great record,youve found another rarity in your list MARCIA HINES-YOU GOTTA LET GO massive on the rare soul scene in the u.k and a price tag of hundreds!from what i know the album sold tons but the single only a handful have ever surfaced its rare!also got released in italy and possibly other european countries but the story is the same with the itallian copy. i believe you will find doug parkinson in the salvos but all the others are gonna take SOME searchin' good look

For Marcia Hines's "You've Gotta Let Go", I unfortunately don't have the single but I've got it on her 1975 album "Marcia Shines" which is a great album. Her biggest hit on that album is "From The Inside" and I have the Countdown clip for it too. If I see the single anywhere I'll certainly buy it, hey is it on 12" or is 7"? My top favourite on the album is her disco version of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash".

She made quite a number of appearences on Countdown between 1975-1981 and was crowned "Queen Of Pop" a few times in the 70's too. Too bad a lot of the early shows don't exist in ABC archives. I'm currently on a dog search for early Countdown episodes on early home video recordings from the 70's on unusual formats of video such as Philips VCR format, Nationa video cartridges, 1/2" reel-reel videos etc... and I have put up a website about it too which is at http://web.1earth.net/~funkydud/ . ABC is supporting me in the Countdown hunt and I'm soon going to get a complete list of all the shows that aired in the 70's so I'll see what disco/funk/soul related artists appeared on the show. I think the Temptations even performed on Countdown back in 1975 as well.

Just recently got some photocopies of log sheets of what's on the first 10 episodes of Countdown and found out that Doug Parkinson first performed "Everlasting Love" on Countdown's 6th show which aired 13th December 1974
