Default James Brown's 'Ain't It Funky' LP

I just bought the reissue of this LP recently. Man this thing is really cool. I'm the guy who likes hearing alternate mixes and versions of songs I've listened to a million times. So the discoveries I made on this record were a welcome treat.

The A-side is alright. Ain't It Funky is the first cut and it's the track you've probably heard on various James Brown CD comps. Fat Wood, the second song on that side is a blues shuffle that is not funky at all. It didn't appeal to me.

The gold was to be found on the B side. I've heard the track Nose Job (song 3 on side B) before, so I already knew what to expect. The other cuts Cold Sweat, Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose, Use Your Mother, and After You Done It were tracks I've also heard before, or at least I thought I had. James actually took the backing tracks of these famous tracks and had someone (Jimmy Nolan?) playing lead guitar over top. For those of you who are samplers, Cold Sweat is presented without James' vocals! In other words, there's no 'uh!' or talking over the drum break. Really cool. The guitar solo comes in mid way into the bass-drum groove, so there's plenty there for sampling beats. Use Your Mother is AKA You Gotta Have A Mother (I think that was the name of the track from the Motherlode LP); After You Done It is AKA From The Love Side that Hank Ballard did in '72.

"Superbad Superslick" is taken off the 1975 LP "EVERYBODY’S DOIN’ THE HUSTLE AND DEAD ON THE DOUBLE BUMP".... just about at the time that James Brown's funk sound was beginning to sound outdated as disco took over.

As far as 'Ain't It Funky' goes, it's obviously always interesting to hear different versions of such classics as 'Give It Up Turn It Loose', but for me 'Nosejob' is a real stand out (wasn't it used as a sample by Gang Starr?)

I don't mind the late 70s James Brown stuff. It wasn't too bad, but not as good as the funk he used to do.

'Nose Job' is a great track. I think for me it's played out though, which is why I didn't mention it. Hearing the alternate mixes of the other cuts was a revelation. I'm surprised these haven't been put onto CD. There was a compilation called 'James Browns Instrumentals' that was put out years ago. I think it's about time they put out a Vol.2 because there's enough stuff out there on those late 60s King albums and singles to make up another CD set.

How odd!

Nose Job sounds like a Big Band score.....played by a Big Band. Kinda funk-by-numbers, library music.
