Hi everyone I'm new to the forum so please be gentle. I've recently acquired a box of 12" singles and LP's, one of the records is the self titled vinyl LP by Skull Snaps. Trouble is I don't know if it is an original or a reissue. Anyone here know what the differences are, eg matrix numbers etc. I've tried elsewhere on the net but I've had no luck, so I thought I'd ask the experts here.

I bought the Skull Snaps re-issue abought 5 years ago, i also have some original G.S.F singles (Lloyd Price & Eddie Holman) the problem is that the re-issue has the right label and number series. If you have the original youre talking about £150.

I don't know what the original looked like, but the repressings tend to have glossy, single piece covers. The originals tend to be made up of a cardboard interior, with to paper images, one pasted over the front of the album, and the second over the back. At least that's the difference between my Bohannon 'Stop & Go' albums - the original vs a repressing. Like Tony said, matrix numbers are usually the same because all they do is copy the original. If you're not sure, you should just take it to a record store to see if the guy running it can tell. Disco Funk

The most positive way to differentiate the two is to check the cover. The reissues have plasticky covers, whereas the originals really feel like cardboard. The cardboard itself, if you check inside the cover (where you slide the record), will be very homogenous and white on a reissue, as the chemicals used today keep the white very white for a very long time. An original will be at best tan, most probably dark brown, and have the texture of recycled. If it still has a shrinkwrap, an original will have a single seam going around the borders of the record; a reissue will have a seam going down the middle of the cover, on the flip side, vertically, with a junction surface of about a half-inch width. The vinyl itself will have a shiny, level-with-the-vinyl centerpiece (label) on a reissue, with a little less sheen around the edge, as if it had been sanded; whereas an original will have the usual bump you can feel and see going around the edge of the centerpiece.

Thank you to everyone, particularly Kool Kriss. Looks like I've got a reissue. Nevermind, thanks once again.
