Default Michael Brecker R.I.P

Only heard today that Michael Brecker, the man who was possibly the greatest tenor saxophonist of the past 20 years, died on January 13th. I was truly saddened to hear the news, especially as he and his brother's (Randy Brecker) playing has always been nothing less than immaculate and I had viewed them both as more or less invincible.

Time to drag out the Brecker Brothers or Players Association tracks that he appeared on and maybe some of the funkadelic/Bootsy Collins ones (apart from any number of True Jazz outings, where he and his brother have been prolific, as sidesmen).

Michael Brecker also had a fantastic performance on Esther Phillips' album "What A Diff'rence A Day Makes".

Sad news indeed.

Yes, that's terribly sad news.(it always seems to be lately ). I've got quite a few records that Michael &/or Randy play on & always loved their own stuff like 'East River'. It's really strange but only yesterday I noticed that he played on the Poussez LP. (much as I love it I never really studied the credits b4.)

Wow, I hadn't read this one

Michael Brecker always amazed me for his ubiquitousness. He was one of the most-looked after session players in the 70s and 80s and he seemed to be everywhere, from ECM sessions with Pat Metheny to disco instrumentals with The Players Association, to Frank Zappa's "The Purple Lagoon/Approximate" (!) with brother Randy. This amazing track is in the Zappa in New York CD (live 1977).
