Can anybody tell me what are the groups/album titles on:
Top row, 1st pic on the left (I remember seeing this cover but my memory fails me on the artist/title
2nd row, last pic on the right (looks like Denise Lasalle...If it is, I didn't know she was ever on Westbound

The yellow and green guys in suits is the Detroit Emeralds with I'm in love with you. They did atleast 4 albums with Westbound and another is also in that compilation's picture. The other Lps were Feel the need, Do me right, and You want it you got it. In 1998, Westbound/Ace issued a Greatest hits on the Detroit Emeralds complete with unissued stuff and flipsides.

Yes, Denise Lasalle was with Westbound and the album pictured was Here I am again (with 4 bonus tracks). The 2 earlier Lps included On the Loose and Trapped by a thing called love which was also her signature tune.

All of these 7 albums are available on import Westbound/Ace Cds.

the Fantastic Four's "Got to Have Your Love" has always been one of my favorites and reminds me of Double Exposure's best songs.

in the lower left is Junie Morrison, who would later join Funkadelic and contribute to their timeless classic "One Nation Under a Groove." It's one of the druggiest, funkiest albums ever made.

Thanks eddie. I don't know much about the Detroit Emeralds except for the obvious hits but like I said I remembered the cover which caught my attention when I ran across this comp. I guess I also never really paid much attention to Denise Lasalle's earlier stuff. I knew she was on Malaco in the 80's and she did some stuff on Wand or Alston (I think???) in the mid/late 70's... the same label that Betty Wright was on correct?

Whoa tony.....I never heard of the two Westbound acts you mention...."Houston Person" & "Fantstic Four". I'll be on the lookout for "Fantastic Four" seeing as I like Double Exposure's stuff. Can someone go a little deeper in-depth about these guys?

You know, I've seen that Junie Morrison cd around a lot over the last few yrs. Junie's name is usually held in high regards as he was around on the Ohio Players early albums on Westbound. I didn't realize that he had anything to do with Funkadelic's stuff though...I have all of their Westbound sides on cd but I admit I didn't buy anything by them after the Uncle Jam Wants You album. I take it his involvement with them was AFTER the Westbound yrs??

What I found strange is the fact that usually when the name "Westbound" is mentioned, Funkadelic & Junie Morrison's name is almost always brought up but there was a comp released on BGP back in 2003 that didn't include anything by Junie but had a bunch of stuff from the Westbound/Eastbound labels by artists that I never heard of such as The 19th Hole, The Motivations, King Errisson, Silky Vincent, Jimmy Scott, Robert Lowe, Boby Franklin's Insanity (did a great cover of Funkadelic's "Hit It And Quit It), Mighty Elegant (whom did the original version of "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky" which was later done by Ripple. Bootsy Collins also makes a cameo appearance on this cd with his only Westbound offering "RPM" under the name "Boots". Sadly, I think this compilation was a bit overrated.

The Fantasic Four recorded on Motown in the 60's doing mainly ballads. I have about 3 singles and an album by them on Westbound. the lp is worth looking for - "Got to have your love", how can it not be good when it was mixed at Sigma Sound in Philly by Tom Moulton. I have a couple of tracks by Houston Person on Westbound the killer track is "Disco Sax" imagine Grover Washington making a Disco record, that's what it sounds like. I've remembered some other stuff i liked on the label -Dennis Coffey, Mike Theodore, & King Errison.

Actually the Fantastic Four recorded for Ric Tic in the 60's which was later bought out by Motown. Motown issued and has since deleted a best of on Fantastic Four and I'm glad I got my copy. It's one of the best but its 60's soul ballads.

Actually I bought both of those Westbound compilations (A sweet taste of Westbound and Westbound Funk). The Westbound Funk had some obscure names and that's why I bought it. I have not played it yet (backlogged by about 2000 discs) but figured there must be something decent on it. IMO anything was better than early Westbound Funkadelic or Ohio Players. Too me "Ecstacy" was incomplete although it did reach number 1 and "Funky Worm" was filler in my eyes. Ohio Player's "Skin Tight", "Fire", and "Honey" were the ones from their early Mercury period that I strongly liked. Funkadelic was too hard for me.

One of the best albums in my collection was released by Motown in the 70's. The legandary "Ric Tic Relics" lp, it's an overview of that Detroit label it incs. the Fan 4 - J.J.Barnes - Laura Lee - Edwin Starr.

Houston Pearson is still recording. He's been doing straight ahead jazz for the last 20+ years for various labels including Muse Records. He has been a sideman for Joey Defrancesco and Etta Jones (not James) among others.

Found another Houston Person track in a pile of 7" i was looking thru, it's another disco cut "Dancing feet" on Mercury 76' from an album called "Pure pleasure".

Westbound had some great cuts in the early '70s. It was a label we really looked out for back then.

I was soooo glad to get hold of Donald Austin's (Eastbound oops!) classic, Crazy Legs on CD. Man, that was a real floorfiller BITD.

I'm not sure how much solo recording Junie Morrison did, but I have an album by him called "Evacuate Your Seats" (typical double entendre) that clearly shows how much he contributed to Funkadelic's later success on Warner Brothers. And it appears that not many people noticed that Funkadelic's trippy album "The Electric Spanking of War Babies" has one of the last recorded performances by Sly Stone.

[Disco Funk]

Junie Morrison played all of the instruments on his Westbound solo LPs. I think I read somewhere that even the Ohio Players' 'Funky Worm' was all him.

The Detroit Emeralds album pictured at the top left contained the break beat anthem 'You're Getting A Little Too Smart'. If you listened to rap music in the late 80s, early 90s, you'll recognize the beat.

You're Getting A Little Too Smart - the pure drum beat happens just before where this sound sample starts

Disco Funk
