| What's even worse is when one comical song overshadows your entire career. When somebody mentions Clarence Carter, all I think about is his 80's hit "Strokin'". |

| I know this is pre-funk era, but I'd have to say 'If You Wanna Be Happy' by Jimmy Soul is the quintessential humourous soul song. "...never make a pretty woman your wife, so from my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you..." I've always thought the banter between JB and the band in 'Get Up Offa That Thing' was pretty funny. 'Why Can't We Be Friends' by War is another song done with a sense of humor. Unintentionally funny is probably that dance song 'Speak Well' by Philly USA, where the lead singer cuts up a guy saying something about it not being the size of one's 'pencil' but how well you write with it, and that the guy is writing "without any lead at all". I just remembered another comical R&B/Soul/Dance record: The Original Disco Duck album by Rick Dees. When I first listened to the album, I thought it was pure cheese. But on repeated listening, I began to appreciate the funk and soul value of at least the backing tracks, if not the lyrics. The guys who played on that album were the same guys who played on the Stax records of the early 70s, like Willie Hall on drums. Disco Funk |
