WOT?? NO BAR-KAYS??

If you have been following Sammy, Blax's and my posts in the latest "battle of the bands" challenge in the thread "Friday night happy hour w/Sam "ALL JAM" #9" in "What Are We Listening To This Week", you will have seen that I am not well acquainted with the music of the BAR-KAYS, and don't have any of their music!! :oops:

Stop laughing Sammy and Blax!! :sad:

In my record/CD collection, I also feel that I am under-represented by the music of Earth, Wind and Fire and also Barry White/Love Unlimited Orchestra. I intend to put all these right a.s.a.p.!! :grin:


Are there any others of you out there who have a large embarrassing gap in your knowledge and/or record/CD collection of a well-known disco funk band, and are BRAVE ENOUGH to admit it????? :grin: :grin:

Hey, Jazz!! Dont be sad!

I'm just amazed that someone like you, with a huge musical knowledgement, dont know any Bar Kays track!!! It is quite uncommon to me!! Of course, I dont know all the bands in the world (saddly), but I always tought Bar Kays were big stars.

I recommend you, find and buy ANY Bar-Kays stuff that you can. You will like it, for sure!! If not, send them to me......heh heh heh! :lol:

It is interesting that certain US bands like Con Funk Shun and Bar-Kays did not get played in the clubs I used to go to – they should have been!!

Take “Strawberry Letter 23” and “Right On Time” (Brothers Johnson) for example. I only ever heard them in England on the radio – I don’t think I have heard them played in the clubs!! …

No need to fret my friend. As large as my collection is, there are countless of records listed on this site that I never heard of. Strangely enough, my friend DJ Mitch, whose collection is as large as mine if not larger, was at my house this weekend visiting from New York and not only does he not own a record by 'Sun', but he's never heard any of their music. I played 'Sun is here', 'Do what you wanna do' and 'Radiation level' and he never heard any of them before. As you said, that's the beauty of this site. I've seen many songs listed more than once that I never heard of, but I wrote them down as things to look for. As Blax stated it's more of a shock to us that someone as knowledgeable with the funk as you are would not own any Bar-kays material. All the more reason to go get some. (SMILE)

If it weren't for Audio Galaxy, there would be a HUGE gap in my knowledge of disco music as it's harder to find disco/funk records in Australia than in USA or UK. As for the Bar-Kays I didn't know about this group until heard their "Son Of Shaft" sample on Izan's dance music page back in 1998 and I thought it was so cool that I wanted to get it. Most of the Bar-Kays music I have is on MP3 because it's really hard to find any of them in Australia. I've only found a one Bar-Kays 45 at a record shop which has "Body Fever/Deliver Us" which was recorded in 1980. I ordered a "Best Of Bar-Kays" CD which sounded really good except that all the songs were 90's re-recordings which was very well done but I prefer their original recordings.

Anyhow prior to this website and being in the forum, I had very little knowledge of the rarer disco. Most of my knowledge was in my collection of at the time 150 records and a lot of them were mainstream disco bands.

There are still a lot of gaps for me with the knowledge of disco groups particularly the late 70's disco stuff. When Audio Galaxy was around I mainly downloaded disco music from 1972-1976 as it's my favourite era of disco so I have more early stuff than later stuff. I thought Audio Galaxy was going to be around for a very long time so I left a lot of the late 70's stuff til later. Plus there are 1000's of late 70's disco records around opposed to the early/mid 70's so there's a lot I'm still yet to discover from 1977-1982.

A lot of Bernie's 12" records listed in his A-Z I've never heard before as well.

And I must confess the only France Joli song I know is "Come To Me" :oops: :oops: :oops: .

The more I explore this site the more comfortable I feel. Of one thing I am certain -- the legendary drinking (ahem, etc.) of my youth perhaps interfered with my memory of many of the details of the tunes that at this time are just snippets of melody and lyrics that occur to me in daydreams from time to time.

Thank goodness for the warmth and understanding of the members of this site. I am a professional in the entertainment field, but it's been almost 20 years since I've been involved with disco of any sort. I find it amazing how elitist and snobby forums, newsgroups and websites dealing with certain other topics I deal with professionally are (e.g., pro audio, fine wine, food trends, market research and market trends).
