Default BEST HINRG COVER OF A NORTHERN SOUL CLASSIC

There were quite a few covers of Northern Soul classics and many were transformed into HINRG hits. Which one do you HINRG fans think is best?

I'm not sure if 'Get Ready' by the Temps is classed as Northern Soul (it's certainly 60s Motown so that's close enough isn't it? :-? ) but I always absolutely adored Carol Hitchcock's '86 version.

Nice one Sadradee, I used to play that and the cropwd loved it!
The one I like is Countdown by Kofi and the Lovetones. It is so much like the Tempos original from 1967!

I also love the Carol Hitchcock version of get ready...
I also like Skiing in the snow - this always appears on Northern soul Cds - and I quite like the version by Laura Pallas & the reputations which came out on Record Shack... Ian Levine re-recorded THE ELGINS "HEAVEN MUST HAVE SENT YOU" on Nightmare and it has a HINRG feel to it...

i have to say i hate these records DAVICILLO i cant see in what way you say koffi & the lovetones and the tempos are similar apart from the words :-? but then again im biased cos i love the original so much.
i think i dislike even more ski-ing in the snow,i also have fond memories of this, the original in truth is not really a masterpiece but every cover of it has been dire [beach girls 60s/wigans ovation 70s/laura 80s]
i saw laura live just before this came out i thought she was GREAT she sang [much to my horror]this and also 20/20 vision which blew me away live,i looked for 20/20 to be the next single eager to purchase, but it was ski-ing in the snow,i lost intersest, ive followed levines carear since i was 16 and many times have been at a loss to understand where his head is, and for me this is a perfect example of that, sorry chaps

DAVICILLO i lost the topic where you asked wherei live, quite near to your uncle, right near the town hall but looking to move soon.

Discodisk, I quite agree with you about 'Sking in the snow', and with all the remakes I do prefer the originals always. The only one I liked was Kofi and the Lovetones. My mate is a real scooter boy and hates with a vengence all of the remakes. He doesn't slag them off he just doesn't like 'em.
As for Ian Levine, his stuff started off well and he did some great remixes but when the Nightmare stuff started to come out (in thier droves!), no disrespect Energyguy, but I went off the UK Hinrg stuff.
I thought you worked in one of the clubs in Jersey as you mentioned Groove Corporation 'Your eyes'. If you did I'd haul my cousins and myself down for a few bevies the next time I was over!

Countdown by Kofi and the Lovetones also gets my vote, I used to like " The next in Line" by Eric Roberts but dug it out and played it today and it really didn't do it.

Default Excuse my ignorance here,

but what does "Northern Soul" mean? Is that a musical style or a record label?

Hello. Northern soul became a musical phenomenon in the UK.
It was basically a cult following (mostly in the North of England) - Djss/soul fans meeting up every week at local clubs to play/listen to very obscure soul music recorded in the USA.
Many of these recordings had never seen the light of day in the USA - the majority of them had been recorded on the cheap by unknown soul groups/singers. UK DJs would scour small record shops/music warehouses to search out these records - many of them would exchange hands for big bucks. UK DJ Ian levine was a massive collector of such records and built up a very impressive collection.

This is knda funny cause I happen to know Laura Pallas; well, let's just say...I've met her...... She's now a "manger" in Hollywood. (Apart from the recording career, she also played "Evita's sister" in the movie of Evita.!!!! )

She looks sorta like Lainie Kazan--but with an English accent!!!

I cracked up when I read in Joel Whitburn's book that she had a Hi-NRG hit!!!! I think I even found it on a compilation that I have. Must look again tonight!!!!!

I always thought Countdown sounded like a Northern Soul record but never knew until today that it actually was a cover. That still gets my vote as one of my fave hi-nrg records let alone a hi-nrg cover.

Default Northen Soul Hi-Nrg Remakes

hey what ever happed to Kevin Antony Roberts also associated with Electricity Records. My Fave was Nothings Worse Than Being Alone by Velvette i never heard the original version of that, Here in the US Northern Soul couldn't compete with the then "new" Funk Scene. I also met Laura Pallas she was singing background for Jocelyn Brown at a club called Tramps she was great. I loved Emergency by her but that was an Ian Levine original

I think Kevin Anthony Roberts still DJs - I have most of his productions on 12".
Laura Pallas is a fantastic singer - I also have "hands off", "sweet confusion" (a ballad) & " Revenge is sweet" on 12" - She also did backing vocals on the DEAD OR ALIVE album "NUDE" in 1989.
