You know you've hit the heights of cheese and tacky (and tacky cheese for that matter) when your hit dance song is used in a safe-sex promotional TV ad that completely contradicts the message your song was sending!

I've only seen it *once* on MTV in the US (waaaayyyyy back in the late 80's). As the song thumped away --I thought it was actually the video to the song--, you saw this young couple making out BIG TIME in an alley. They're going at it all hot and heavy. As their hormones apparently get the best of them, they begin taking their clothes off and the picture fades. As the screen remains blank, a voiceover begins, "Your partner was hot, you wanted it now, and you weren't thinking." A new picture fades in of a young man in bed, obviously very weak, with purple splotches covering his face and arms. The voiceover continues, "You had unsafe sex. Now, you're sick with the big A and your days are numbered. Was it really worth it? Remember to think before you have sex."

Apparently, it was too much for the powers that be because that ad, horrifyingly effective despite its tackiness, was never broadcast again.

Shirley Bassey & Chris Rea: LA PASSIONE (disco). This is as late 70's as the late 90's ever got, with a full symphony orchestra behind the Diva. And she really is at her very best here, screaming at the top of her lungs, arms outstretched, no doubt glittering like a million euro mirrorball by Swarovski. Camp is too cheap a description. Neo-Disco grandeur you can't do without.

Oh I've got that Chris Rea/Shirley Bassey track on CD single Jussi; I agree, it's fabby & should've been huge! Same goes for her record with Yello, 'The Rhythm Divine'; simply divine darling! 8)

OK - I've identified it - The campest track...........ever!

It's one I'd forgotten about (and so'd everybody else by the looks of it!)

But amongst the collection I picked up yesterday, there it was, shaking its wrists at me, covered in glitter and squealing like a stuck pig.

Yup, it's.............................................. .......................

Arrow Re: Camp Classics!

Being an ex hi-nrg dj, I have all these old camp classics on vinyl, and now on mp3. In total I have about 1500 hi-nrg classics.

One good thing about Hi-NRG, is that it was exclusive to the gay underground clubs (with the exception to some which broke into the commercial charts).

My favourite all-time gay Hi-NRG artist was the late great DIVINE!
You just could not get any camper than that!

There is a great web site which displays classic Hi-NRG Video's at:
mcmixer.net/hi-energy which is great if you fancy an hour or so of reminising.
