Default The Original HEART OF GLASS

---- Apparently the original version of Blondie's "HEART OF GLASS " was recorded as early as 1975 as "ONCE I HAD A LOVE" ...."Once I had a love .... and it was a gas ... soon turned out to be a thing of the past .... Once I had a love .... and it was a gas ....soon turned out to be a pain in the ass " were the original lines .... never used the "heart of glass " phrase .... also Deborah Harry's voice is way up front and crystal clear .... no gray aliens' voices doing the refrain either .....

ABOUT "HEART OF GLASS " -----

"Heart of Glass"
Blondie
Chrysalis 2295
April 1979 • Billboard: #1

-------- Blondie was so resigned to not having hit records, that when the disco-oriented "Heart of Glass" went to number one, members of the band found themselves apologizing for what bass guitarist Nigel Harrison called "compromise with commerciality." Lead singer and group leader Deborah Harry describes it differently. "I don't think being commercial is totally derogatory. I think that this was the most intriguing or interesting cut (on Parallel Lines) being that it was a crossover, and it... helped introduce new wave music in a more commercial way."

The single was such a big hit, it even warranted a party thrown by Andy Warhol at Studio 54. It was overwhelming for Harry, who tried unsuccessfully to escape the hordes of photographers who suddenly found her marketable. Guitarist Chris Stein, band co-leader and Harry's lover, told Creem magazine, "We didn't expect the song to be that big. We did it as a novelty item to put more diversity into the album. It's not selling out, it's only one song."

They had actually been performing a more funk-oriented version of the song years before it appeared on the Parallel Lines album. Harry recalls how the song was written: "It came very easily and very naturally, all at once. It just toppled into place. We had the music around for a while and I think Chris came up with the 'heart of glass' phrase... I was so tired of hearing girl singers write or sing about being beaten by love, and I just sort of said, well listen, I think there are a lot of girls who... walk away."

"Heart of Glass," which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, was the second single from Blondie's Parallel Lines album. Released in Sept. 1978, Parallel Lines peaked at #6 and spent a total of 108 weeks on the Billboard Hot 200. It was certified platinum by the R.I.A.A. in June 1979.

"Heart of Glass" and the rest of Parallel Lines were produced by gifted rock graduate Mike Chapman, who had already produced number one hits in America for Exile ("Kiss You All Over") and Nick Gilder ("Hot Child in the City"). A fan of Blondie's first three albums, he felt they could do better. Working with Chapman was very different from what the band was used to. Harry says, "It was diametrically opposite from working with Richard Gottehrer. He's very laid back and Mike is a real hot chili pepper and very energetic and enthusiastic. Mike would strive for the technically impeccable take so we would do take after take whereas Richard always went for the inspired take.

Despite its commerciality, "Heart of Glass" provided a problem for radio stations. Many objected to the lines, "Once I had a love and it was a gas/Soon turned out to be a pain in the ass." Stations who preferred not to play the original were provided with a version in which a previous chorus without the offending word was substituted. Harry's reaction to censorship: "I always go along with the idea that any kind of controversy causes excitement and more interest in the long run. That doesn't bother me."

Although Blondie had gone through some personnel changes, the line-up on "Heart of Glass" worked together smoothly. Along with Harry, Stein and Harrison were keyboard player Jimmy Destri, drummer Clem Burke and guitarist Frank Infante. Harry and Stein wrote together and separately, with the other members contributing songs as well.

Blondie had released several singles prior to "Heart of Glass," including "X Offender" and "In the Flesh" on Private Stock Records, an updating of Randy and the Rainbows' "Denise" retitled "Denis" and "Hanging on the Telephone," the first 45 from Parallel Lines. None of their singles made the Billboard Hot 100 until "Heart of Glass." The band was touring Italy and were in Milan when they found out the record had gone to number one in the States. How did it make Harry feel? "Great! I flipped out. We all got drunk -- it was super."

Default that's a stunning album, but

but there's another song on the album I like ten times better. It's called "Sunday Girl." Every time I hear it I think it gave Madonna a lot of her ideas for pop songs. "Sunday Girl" is one of the poppiest, hookiest, catchiest songs from that era. I once heard a local punk band play it at one of San Francisco's street festivals.

thanks for letting me know that Pepper :D

now here are the lyrics :

Lyrics for: Heart Of Glass

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

In between
What I find is pleasing and I'm feeling fine
Love is so confusing there's no peace of mind
If I fear I'm losing you it's just no good
You teasing like you do

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Lost inside
Adorable illusion and I cannot hide
I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside
We coulda made it cruising, yeah

---- I listened to that song many a time tryimg to understand those lyics ... I wasn't even close...

"Mucho mistrust?" ? "We coulda made it cruising" ?

and "You teasing like you do " ........ .I always thought that line said : "You're cheating like the devil"

BTW that is one of the best albums of all time IMO .... I've got to dig it out to listen to "Sunday Girl"

Never really liked "Sunday Girl".

"Heart of Glass", on the other hand, with the hypnotic guitar and voice effects, still gives me shivers up to today. Probably a mix of the memories it brings back, and the intrinsic entrancing quality it has...

Strangely enough, it has to be mentioned in a forum for me to think of diggin' it out for some aural masturbation...
