"MY NUMBERS UP" - Salsoul Orchestra

Keefe ID'd this third song in the Bobby Viteritti October 1979 Trocadero mix. I am loving this tune and can't find it listed anywhere. When was this gem released?--is it on any LP or CD or just a 12"??? AMG doesn't have it. It's not in Bernie's vault either. :x :x :x

It's got a calypso/ Island feel and is rife with percussion and all the stuff that gets me groovin'--BV actually mixes in Jackie Moore's "This Time Baby" for a few measures and then goes right back to Salsoul--a perfect example of the little teases he used to do so flawlessly. :D :D :D

BTW, those DJ mixes are accessible once again--I registered and they sent me an e-mail with a link to them. I'm listening to BV's mix as I type---"What's New Buenos Aires?" Eh?

I googled it...

The Salsoul Orchestra's next album release was in 1979. "How High" was a collective effort, tracks were produced by Bunny Sigler, Ron Tyson, Ron Baker, and the title track by Steve O'Donnell and Colin Horton Jennings. "How High" was originally released as a Cognac 12" single, but with its inclusion on the album it was re-released as a Salsoul Orchestra featuring Cognac 12". The standout tracks are "My Number's Up," a groove heavy pumper that was equally at home in the gay clubs as it was it the black clubs. And "Resorts International," before 'Club Med' there was 'Resorts International,' this is a campy send up in hommage. With even less of the original orchestra members on this album, the bright spot was that the 'Sweethearts' were back, but it still wasn't a Vince Montana production.

Here is a scan of Salsoul's "High High" Album,"My number's up" is 7:47 and Mixed by Tee Scott, I don't think I ever ever played anything off this Lp back then :o , not one of Salsoul Best efforts IMO, the most memorable thing I remember about it was the back cover, 8) I always wondered how they got away with it, but I'm glad they did.. :lol:

My Numbers Up is my new fave!!! I can't stop singing it. :D :D :D :D :D I must find this LP. Was there ever a 12"???? :-?

I checked my Salsoul 12"s --- didn't find one. But, you did force me to pull out the How High lp so I can give another listen. I laughed because of the cuts I had 'marked' to play, My Number... wasn't one of them. Let's see what the years have done to my ears. :D

Yes , I did play this one, it was released on 12" first by Cognac as your post describes, I think it was remixed by Larry Levan, but this Lp was probably just 'sampled" through until yesterday :(

So Nicky, what's the verdict? Maybe ya gotta hear it in the context of the Viteritti mix--but I think this brings me back to the old Troc days--one of those old songs that is embedded in the brain that I never knew I knew.

This is why I love to hear the old mixes--there are sometimes gems that you had forgotten or never knew--that make you immediately want to go on a quest to hunt down.

It's also interesting to note the gaps each of us have in our song knowledge. I'm amazed other people know stuff I've never heard of and they ask about stuff that seems real obvious to me. Depends on what you were exposed to, I guess. :roll:

The verdict? Well, it's a thumb half-way up. I can see why I passed on this one back then. But, as I played it and turned the volume up I can see where this song can easily catch on. It's got a driving hook that stays on the brain. I'd play it now, just for it's fun factor. As a matter of fact, I am playing it and my head is bee-boppin' along... :)

BTW -- You'll like the album when you get it. On side one is How High and My Number's Up. In between those two is a mid-tempo ditty called Have a Good Time. It's one of those 'everybody-clap-your-hands-and-get-on-the-dancefloor' numbers with the lyrics: EVERYBODY BUMP AND GRIND, SHAKE YOUR BEHIND AND HAVE A GOOD TIME. AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT A PARTY!

Side 2 starts out with I'll Keep You Warm, produced by Bunny Sigler. This is serious --- Bunny in disco heaven. The last cut is a very pretty mellow instrumental. The let down is the ridiculous Resorts International. :x There's not enough camp in the world to make this work for me.

Obviously this was one of his 140.I'm curious if in fact a 12" had ever been released on this number and if not should have been.I 'm with Nicknack on his observations on this album.Listen to the lyrics on Have A Good Time rather ironic since 1979 was the year of demise for disco yet the words exemplify what disco was all about.

This song does grow on you after a while. I wasn't too crazy about it when I heard it at first.

don't know if this is a dead subject now, but I pulled out my 12" single of "HOW HIGH" and the B side is "MY NUMBERS UP"

is it just me or does Cognac, the vocalist on "HOW HIGH" sound like Jocelyn Brown?
