Default a gray haired artist at Motown?

it may help if you clarify time frames: do you mean the early 1960s when Motown was big, or now, when Motown only has a few prominent artists left? Ooooooooooh, I think I know: Michael McDonald, right?

You're correct osf .....

.... not with the Michael McDonald answer ( even though true )
but with my clue not being specific enough .

This Motown artist didn't hang around with Motown for so long that their hair has since turned gray .... i.e. not Smokey .... and it may have been this artist's first recording deal .... very likely anyway .....

This artist had gray hair on the day the record deal was first signed .....and way back when Motown itself was still so young ........talkin' sixties here now .....

????
:-? :-?

IRENE RYAN????!!!!!!!!!!! She played "Granny" on the "Beverly Hillbillies."!!!!!!! She wore a gray wig on that ; was a redhead (dye-job?) in real life; was in the Broadway musical "Pippin"--the cast recording of which was released on the Motown label--but you can't mean her????

 :o

I'm thinking some crooner-type when Motown was trying to appeal to the Adult Swinger/ Copa nightclub set?

Maybe Billy Eckstine???? :-? :-? :-?

I presume too much ...

Yes......... the grey haired Motown star I'm refering to is Irene Ryan ........ as in GRANNY from the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES   !!

kind of shakes up your confidence in the whole Motown mystique doesn't it ?

But I have to admit I am only presuming that someone playing granny on the Beverly Hillbillies was a true gray head.... and I was also presuming Motown had signed her on during TBH 's peak years ...which would have been in the sixties . Didn't realize she was recording on the cusp of the disco era ...

Wish Irene would have written an autobiography. Would've loved to have read the chapter titled "THE WILD MOTOWN YEARS " Maybe it would've been a Miracle but I wonder which Motowners lead her to Temptation.... and then there were those infamous bitch fights with Diana Ross.....

I am now the proud owner of this record !!! 8) :D

"NO TIME AT ALL "

Irene "Granny " Ryan
Motown 1221
1972 3:58
in original cast album from the hit broadway musical
"Pippin"

A very well done record

opening line :

"When you are as old as I my dear
and I hope that you never are ...."

Best line: (picture Granny Clampett singing this )

"Give me a man who's handsome and strong ,
someone who's tender and steady.

Give me a night that's romantic and long ...
.... then give me a month to get ready
!"

....

Oh , and then there's this ... with all the various "who did what" s in the music world back then ..... ya just never know who's name will pop up where .... as with this odd little Motown song on which the label lists as its producers ... JohnTropea and..... BOB CREWE !!!
