I am trying to track down an original 12" 1979, without much success - My original copy was stolen in 1984. I am also not willing to pay extortinate prices via ebay. I'd settle for the Gladys Knight version.

I disagree. I've heard them both and there's no comparison. No knock on Gladys' version, because it's also very good.

If you'd heard it played by Larry Levan at the Garage you might feel differently about it. The cut was amazing.

So, was there a 12" version of the Ashford & Simpson track? I have the 6:06 instrumental LP version on CD...

from AMG:
"Send It" also includes the dance-oriented instrumental "Bourgie Bourgie," which became a vocal number when, in 1980, lyrics were added for a remake by Gladys Knight & the Pips. "Bourgie Bourgie" was a bigger hit for that group, although Ashford & Simpson's original version enjoyed a fair amount of exposure in dance clubs"

So are you saying that Ashford & Simpson had a 12" with a their vocals on it? I often wondered why they released it as a long instrumental--although it is most lovely like that. I asked this before..and got no answer...
Or are you saying that there was a 12" of the instrumental version?

Remember, John Davis & the Monster Orchestra also did a version with a vocal.

I made a tape with all 3 versions in a row...and I pick the A&S instrumental version as my fave.

I don't know if there was a 12" version or not, but it definitely had some vocals. I can't find ANY version of it on CD right now unfortunately.

As I said, Ashford and Simpson's "Send It" (1977/WB) has the 6:06 instrumental version of "Bourgie, Bourgie."

That LP is on a CD released in 1996.

I have the A&S version on "Live @the Paradise Garage" which clocks in at 5:47

The John Davis Orchestra version is 6:12 and that one is indeed very good but less known perhaps.

I have to say im not a huge fan of the JD orchestra version. I found the vocals were quite cheesy and unnecessary. The A&S version is just a beautiful piece of music which is timeless and works equally well for both listening and dancing purpose, but then Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson are geniuses so its no surprise that their version is so good

Default Disco Classics Vol. 2

I believe one of the versions I'm looking for is on Disco Classics, Vol. 2.

This is actually the John Davis and the Monster Orchestra version though.

It was released in the UK - as a 12" - but not many were produced hence its rarity. I've seen a few come up on ebay....it was released on the Polydor label here.

I'm sure this has been discussed here before.
I've got it on a Warners UK only 12" as the b-side to a later single (can't remember what though!). You need to watch out though... all the copies i've heard (including mine!) have a mastering fault where the master speeds up like crazy for a few seconds.
Was a long time before I found out this wasn't just a crazy part of the mix!!!
