What's up y'all? Slow week this past Friday @ Larry Holmes Ringside, however, those that were there got to hear the following:

Dance (do what you wanna do) - Sun
Get up - Vernon Burch
Love in 'C' minor - Cerrone
Bodyshine - Instant Funk
Reaching for the world - Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes
Take that to the bank - Shalamar
Checkmate - Barrabas
Domino - Donald Byrd
Dance Band - Donald Byrd

to name a few. Those last two were for you Jazz. On the soft side I played:

How 'bout us - Champaign
I'll set you out O.K. - Con Funk Shun
Summer Madness - Kool and The Gang
Suavecito - Malo

Hope this brings back fond memories for you. I had fun playing them.

Easy,

Sam "ALL JAM"

Well, Sammy, what can I say?? You have excelled yourself this time? You picked two Donald Byrd tracks especially for me! And did you know - DOMINOES (The version from “Blue Note – Live At The Roxy” was the Jazz Pilgrims’ ALL-TIME TOP ANTHEM!!!

“Stand Your Problems All In A Row
Watch Them Fall Like Dominoes!”
that was what the Pilgrims were all about…. Dance to the music and forget about your problems…

When the track came on in our local club, we Pilgrims would gather round in a large circle in the middle of the dancefloor, put our arms around each other and GO BESERK! And we used to get down to the trumpet solos as well!!

One Christmas Eve (1981 it was) we were doing just that to “Dominoes”, when my glasses fell off, and broke!! I was due to return to my University (my 3rd year was in Germany) to take my exams, but by the time I got my glasses repaired I had missed all the exams. All because of Dominoes!!

I must confess I’m not too sure if I know “Dance Band” straight off – I will look through my records tonight…

Another anthem in our club scene was “Summer Madness” – that track was massively popular in the UK clubs. Probably my all-time fave Kool and the Gang track!! Nice to cool down to after “Dominoes”…

Nice to see your obscure Vernon Burch track in there. And some Con Funk Shun again! And Sun – another of those groups that wasn’t known in mainstream circles, but didn’t they make some GREAT records? I used to love that Champaign record – good memories on that one, as well. One of your quality ballads! The Shalamar track was always popular, as well, in our clubs.

Yes – and I always liked “Love In C Minor”. I must admit, the story behind the track which was told in another thread on the Board made fascinating reading…

Two tracks I know nothing about :
Checkmate - Barrabas
Suavecito – Malo

Well done, Sammy! Probably your BEST set to date (for me!!). Many many happy memories!!!

Blax and Jazz:

As always, thanks for your comments. It is always a pleasure to hear what you guys have to say on the music. As for Donald Byrd, as Jazz can attest, in the mid '70's he was fusing the line between Jazz, funk and dance music and produced some very critical LP's. The track 'Dance Band' was from my favorite Donald Byrd LP 'Caricatures' ('76). The cover of this LP is also used as the cover of the CD 'The Best of Donald Byrd' which I highly recommended especially for his music from this period in the '70's. He was also a music professor at Howard University in the '70's when he discovered a group of students he later produced as "The Blackbyrds". Jazz, I had no idea 'Dominoes' had such strong feelings for you, but glad they are good ones. As for Barrabas and Malo, they are two great Latin American bands from the '70's which were fusing Latin Rhythms with Soul and Rock ala Santana. There were a few bands like this at that time like Osi Bisa, El Chicano etc. to name a few. 'Suavecito' is a definite classic from the early '70's which I'm surprised to hear you do not know about. 'Checkmate' is on the funky side and on one three Barrabas LP's I own entitled 'Heart of the streets'.
Great album by the way. Hope this answers some of your questions. Blax, were these bands played in Brazil at all seeing that they have a Latin American background? Just curious; By the way, as for 'Love in 'C' minor', I just picked that LP used at a recent record convention I went to for, get this, $1.00. That's right one dollar U.S. currency. Never had the record before that. Talk about a steal.

Easy,

Sam "ALL JAM"

Sammy, El Chicano, Osibisa and Barrabas I knew it. Specially "WOMAN" by Barrabas. But, Suavecito I didnt know it. This tracks never had a massive play in here but, in the underground scene....

About Cerrone, I dig this track. I like the orchestration. I have it on CD and the sound is great!

Great story about the Blackbyrds!! I dig this band and Donald, of course. I didnt know that!! Cool!! And that story that Jazz told, it's hilarious.

Peace.

I know that picture of Donald Byrd, Sammy, as I have that Best Of Donald Byrd compilation. A DJ on the jazz radio station I listen to was saying that, unfortunately, Prof Byrd has not been well, but has been feeling better recently, making a couple of appearances. Hope he stays better ...

Wish I coulda been there last Friday, Sammy.
