The 3 songs that numb me to the bone with pain are:

Unifics-The beginning of the end (1968)

Phyllis Hyman-Give me one good reason to stay (1995)

The Deele-Two ocassions (1987)

The Unifics song is about a guy getting into an altercation with his girlfriend and then she tragically dies and he's left alone and feeling guilty.
The lyrics "Here comes the hurse, black cadallic" is chilling.

The Phyllis Hyman cut from her 1995 "I refuse to be Lonely"Lp may quite very well be her final cry. It was sadly the last chronological track released by just before her death.

The subject matter of Two occasions is sad but it's the instrumental intro that really strikes me. The first 10 seconds sounds like the knock of death, followed by the flash of life, and eventually death consuming your body. To me that record's always been horrific.

Any comments especially regarding "Two occasions" are highly welcomed.

Josh Groban's "You're Still You" and his version of "Vincent" just slay me.

Other "sad" favorites are:

Angela Bofill - This Time I'll Be Sweeter and I Try
Phyllis Hyman - Living All Alone
Mariah Carey - Without You
Selena - No Me Queda Mas
Simone - Quiero Amanecer Con Alguien
Luz Casal - Piensa En Mi (from the movie "High Heels")

(Even if you don't understand Spanish, the last three will still get to you)

Here are a few that always leave a lump in my thoat.....

"Sadie" - the Spinners

"It's so Hard to say Goodbye to Yesterday" - G.C. Cameron (anyone who remembers "Cooley High" knows what I mean)

"Toby" - the Chi-Lites (R.I.P. Eugene....)

"Eleanor Rigby" - the Beatles

....and I may be stretching it a bit, but
"Does your Mama Know about Me" - Jermaine Jackson
because of the subject matter, always brings me down.

Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers did the original version of "Does your mama know about me". It is a great song but some people even after hearing it do not realize that its about the nonacceptance of an interracial couple.
What had an emotional impact on me was the lyrics "Does she know just what I am". People usually say "Does she know who I am". It's quite moving.

Default Phil Collins

The song that really gets me is "Hold On My Heart" by Genesis. Man, Mr. Phil Collins singing to his own heart? That song is so sad. He's telling his heart to slow down because he doesn't want to go through the pain again. Woah, that song really hits home........
