When Horror Stories Become Fond Memories.....Got Some? If you've spun records in the clubs....then no doubt there have been some ackward moments that you wished you could have forgotten but now you can laugh about. I'd love to hear about some of your "finer" moments. Though there have been many, there are a few that really stick out in my mind that I look back on as fond memories. One of them was when I was spinning at Greg's Blue Dot in L.A.. It was a Sunday morning and the place was jam packed (as it usually was on sunday morns). The DJ booth was upstairs so if I wanted to get a cocktail (usually the cocktails were delivered faster than I could down them )... I would go down for one. Anyway, I mixed into Claudja Barry's "Radio Action" and attempted to squeeze my way through the crowd and down to the bar. I made it alright and got my cocktail and just as I turned around to fight my way back upstairs.......the record started skipping (amazingly in an on beat loop). The place was so packed and I think that because it was such a perfect loop...the place went nutz. They were screaming and cheering and it seemed like it took me a half an hour to get back upstairs. Then there was another time, again on a packed Sunday morning, the place was jumping and someone handed me a rag soaked with ethyl chloride and I took a good hit from it....a little too good. I had two copies of the song I was playing and mixing back and forth....well the ethyl chloride hit and I proceded to pick up the wrong needle off the record. I was sooo buzzed from the ethyl that I just froze. It's enough of a shock just to have the blaring music all of a sudden stop....but this time I just froze....I'm not really sure for how long...but I got a standing ovation for it as I'm standing there with a rag hanging out of my mouth. It took a long time to live that one down.
Let's hear about some of your better moments...... |
