| What was the strangest audio set-up that you ever encountered in a club? For me, it was a club called Disco 66, on Route 66. They didn't have a mixer. They had two home stereo systems instead. The dance floor was across the back of a wide building. At each end they had two speakers. Each set of speakers was connected to one amplifier. Each amp had a headset to cue with. The DJ would simply turn down one amp and turn up the other amp to mix records. The crowd would then dance toward the other end of the dance floor, where the music was loudest. The DJ was grateful when I told him there was such a thing as a MIXER made for MIXING records. They didn't even know about putting felt on the turntables to "slip" records. I guest DJd for about ten minutes and then sat out in the club and laughed. A month or two later I went back to see if they had bought a mixer, but the club was closed. It was the weirdest set-up I ever encountered.

| I forgot to add that one club I DJd in regularly put in "Quad" sound in the middle 1970s. There was a joystick on the amplifier and by turning it in a circular motion you could make the sound revolve around the dance floor. We later hooked up a sub-woofer to this, but it made so many of the drink glasses "walk" off the tables that we had to abandon the concept. It was an early "earthquake" effect. Once or twice a night, I would kick on the amp powering this giant subwoofer. The customers got the sensation of the dance floor dropping out from under their feet, like an elevator going down suddenly. The club's owner did not like replacing so much glassware, so I gave up on it. Sure was fun for a while though!
