Your greatest concerts ever???

Hi guys! I couldn't find a good place for this message so here it is. This seems to be the best location for it.

I love music and going to concerts is one of my hobbies. I want to share with you some of the most memorable ones.

1) Stevie Nicks. I have loved Stevie since I was 10 years old. After 26 years waiting to see her live, last summer she came to Charlotte. I went to the show without tickets and expecting to find a sold-out show. I got to the ticket window and a bell rang. The lady told me that was the signal to release any unsold tickets left. As luck, and The Lord!!!, may have it, I got two front row tickets right in front of Stevie!!! The show was wonderful and I got to see my platonic love just about three feet away from me. My friends, dreams DO come true!!!!!

2) Earth, Wind & Fire. The day after the Stevie Nicks concert I got invited to see these guys. I like their music but never really thought to see them live. Big mistake!!! These guys did THE best concert I have ever been to; absolutely wonderful musicianship, and one absolutely unbelievable stage show. Extremely cool band. Their opening act were Rufus and Chaka Khan and they did a pretty fun show too.

If E,W&F ever comes near you, don't miss them!!! I won't!

3) YES during the UNION tour. Crystal clear audio and an amazing display of virtuosity. I have seen them 6 other times after that show and every one of them has been superb but nothing like the first time.

4) RUSH. These guys are simply amazing. The audio in their shows tends to be rather bad but just the drum solos are worth the ticket price.

5) QUEENSRYCHE. My musical tastes are very eclectic as you know. In the Heavy Metal area these guys are one of my favorites. I saw them during their OPERATION MINDCRIME tour in '91. The loudest concert I have ever been to. Another amazing band!

I got a few more but I'll tell you about those some other day. Tonight I want to close with my FIRST concert ever. Not a particularly great one but I remember it very well because it was my first and introduced to the wonderful experience of music. Funny... I also remember another first in my life where I didn't do all that well and where I was also introduced to some WONDERFUL experiences but don't tell my wife I said that!

Ok, here is my first concert ever: THE SUGAR HILL BAND when RAPPER'S DELIGHT came out. I was mesmerized by the lights, the music, and the whole concert-going experience. I was hooked!

And yes! I also got hooked on THAT other first but that one my wife has enjoyed for the last seven years!!! And me too!

My favourite concert was a MARLENA SHAW concert in 1989, when she was doing her jazz thing. I already mentioned it on these boards a few weeks ago.

For all you Londoners out there, another memorable night was when I used to go and see MORRISSEY MULLEN - they had a charity special one night and were joined by GEORGIE FAME. There was some brilliant improvisation that night with Dick Morrissey and his trumpet, Jim Mullen on his guitar and, of course, the wonderful scat vocals of Georgie Fame. In the pub where the concert took place, they had a tiny bar, but they had this Irish barman who could serve ten people at once! The quickest barman I ever saw!!

I have to mention, also, the 2 ROY AYERS concerts I have seen. Great musician and great showman.

I also saw JAMES BROWN in 1987 with MACEO PARKER and all the gang. Brilliant! The thing that impressed me the most were James Brown's teeth - they were SO BRILLIANTLY WHITE !!! And yeah - and his dancing was good too!! The concert opened up with Maceo and Soul Power. Unforgettable.


The most disappointing concert was BRASS CONSTRUCTION in around 1984 in a small concert hall in my home town of Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Small audience / no atmosphere and every number was played too fast including Movin' and Changin'. Shame.

My greatest regret was never seeing MAZE in concert. They were massively popular in the UK and their concerts were truly a special occasion. (I was a broke student...)

I guess mine would have to be the night I saw HRH Donna Summer at Carnegie Hall.

I actually went to NYC by myself since no one I knew saw the earth-shaking significance of this concert: The Diva finally playing Carnegie freakin' Hall, and as a benefit for the AIDS agency Gay Men's Health Crisis. What's not to love??!

It was an awesome show, needless to say. But one of my favorite moments was when a young blond thang sitting in front of me turned to the older guy sitting next to him about three-quarters of the way through the show and asked: "Isn't she going to sing 'Last Dance'?" DUH!!! :roll:

I just laughed so hard when I read that! Priceless.

No Disco concerts for me, but here are some of my faves,

• Morrissey @ Limelight in New York (around '93?) Poor guy almost got killed by fans jumping him as he performed. One of his best shows.
• The Shamen @ Limelight in New York (1993) Just love this group. Saw them another time with Utah Saints @ Palladium.
• Midnight Oil @ 9:30 Club in DC (2001) This was one of the best sounding concerts. Awesome energy too!
• The Orb @ Roseland in New York (1993) This music took me on a trip. Excellent!
• Erasure @ The Beacon Theatre in New York (1994?) They handed out Bingo cards to all ticket holders and later played the game between sets. Great show and sound.
• Xymox @ The Bank in New York (1999?) If you are into these Dutch guys then you know why they are so good. Killer performance.
• Oasis @ Jones Beach in New York ('98-99? Right before they split up) Outdoor concert that rocked. Never thought I would have gotten into them as I did that night. Lots of raw energy.

One of the worst, The Pet Shop Boys @ Radio City around '93-94. My girlfriend and I were completely shocked since we were fans. They just can't pull it off live.

Ozzfest 1999, which Black Sabbath headlined and also featured Rob Zombie and Slayer, among others (and introduced Slipknot to the world)

Summer Sanitaruim in 2000, which featured Metallica, Korn, and System Of A Down, among others

Family Values 1998, which Korn headlined

Pledge Of Allegiance in 2001, which Slipknot headlined

AC/DC (several times)

Rush (several times)

Lollapalooza 1991, which Jane's Addiction headlined

Lollapalooza 1996, with Metallica as headliners

Every other time I've seen Metallica

Nirvana in 1993 (sadly, my only chance to see them)

Rolling Stones in 1989 and 1994

I have in my memory two unforgetable shows, both in my hometown (Porto Alegre in the extreme south of Brazil):

- 1981 - Barry White & Love Unlimited Orch.

And the better (hey, Zeca!) He spend almost the entirely show holding a shirt form my favourite soccer team...INTERNACIONAL. That's great!

Ricardo, E,W&F is number 1 for me!!

They were in Brazil in 1980 but, just made shows in Rio, 1000 miles away from my town. At that time I had 15 Y.O. and I had to be happy for watch by TV. :sad:

At least, today, I have about 5 or 6 tapes and DVD's from their shows to make me happy!

The 'Cover Girls' (Show me)/Jermaine Stewart. Both artist preformed a 'track date' (no band-all music on a 'dat' tape). Both artists gave all and had a wonderful resposne from the club I was spinning at. We also had 'Vanity' (Nasty Girl) but for a one hit wonder there wasn't much of a turn-out. It was great meeting all of these artists (still have the photo of Vanity and the Cover Girls and myself ) and promoting thier music and talent.

Ok, here are some more in no particular order.

a) Journey. I have been a big of fan of these guys for at leat 25 years but never had a chance to see them before. They played in Charlotte last Summer and, even though Steve Perry wasn't there, it was a great show. The coolest part was to take my then-4 year old daughter with me. She had a ball and so did I just by watching her and listening to her singing "Don't Stop Believing."

b) Santana during the Supernatural tour. Also with my daughter. Another astounding display of virtuosity.

c) Jean Luc Ponty. Also with my daughter! And also another guy that I waited 27 years to see in concert. He played in this very small theater in Charlotte and there were maybe 60 people in the audience. We sat right in front of Jean Luc. Absolutely amazing.

d) R.E.O Speedwagon in their first visit to Venezuela in 1987. My best friend got one of the drum sticks that were thrown into the audience. The following morning we went to the hotel where the band was staying and we got to meet three of them. Neal, the keyboardist, gave us tickets for the second show that night. I told him to look for us in front row and, sure enough, that's where we were when the show started. He recognized us and after the third or fourth song got off the stage to shake our hands. Imagine the faces of those around us!!!

I have had some wonderful moments at concerts, especially those I have shared with my daughter. However, I have some somewhat sad moments when I think of concerts I'll never get to see: Queen and Bob Marley are two that come to mind right away.

Hi! I got a good story for you about Chairmen Of The Board. Between '96 and '99 I worked for an audio-video production company here in Charlotte and during that time these guys recorded several songs in our studios. Since I'm not into Beach Music or Shag, and my area of work was directly in the studio I didn't meet the guys in the band but I saw them in the studio several times. Since I am a bit of a drummer myself, I did get to talk to the drummer they used in one of the songs. Nice fellow.

If you have any of their Cds from around that time ('96 to '99) check their inserts and they should mention something about recording, mastering or remastering at ICCA Studios in Charlotte. I think they even mention the recording engineer I used to work with in that company. His name is Les Lingle.
