Default Signature Hit

Hey guys,

not sure if we ever brought up this topic for discussion... but I wanted to ask our forum members:

What would be disco music's signature hit?

I mean what is the song that defined the era as a whole... what would you play for someone who didn't necessarily listen to it and or also someone that was born way after it passed?

My choice would be Sylvester's - You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)

this is not my favorite song... however it does the job. :)

Off the top o' me head...with very little thought, I'd pick

THAT'S WHERE THE HAPPY PEOPLE GO by The Trammps from early 1976.
:D  :P :o     8) :)

I wouldn't have thought of "You Make Me Feel," but agree it just might be the ticket as it is accessible to just about any taste. I've known people who said they didn't like Disco make an exception to this song. If I think of another I'll post back.

I would have to say "Never Can Say Goodbye" by Gloria Gaynor. Mainly because it's not just a classic disco song, but it has all of the elements a disco song should have: a good beat, a good melody, good vocals, and a good vibe. Plus it was released in 1974, the year disco music came to fruition as a genre.

Well, I'm picking Cocomotion. Not just because I like it but it seems to get a reaction like, what is that...I've never heard something like that before...It's nice to hear something that isn't booming all the time... 8)

I'm sure we could each come up with a Top Ten of signature songs. There are just so many that can qualify for that distinction but my choice would be

We Are Family -Sister Sledge
8) :P  :D

If pressed for just one I'd pick..

"Turn the beat around" Vicky Sue Robinson, when ever I hear this song I'm transported back to a packed Disco.

I picked Sylvester's hit ....

1) because it was during the peak years 74-79.

2) the video had a mirror ball in it... with Sylvester doing his thing... not that it was gay ... but because he talks about being on the dance floor, we're feeling happy, sex & etc. etc.

I was going to plump for Vicky Sue, but thought it wasn't a big enough hit. So put her down for #2.

Difficult question - If I had to pick one it would be Feelin Good - Francine McGee.

[Memo to self - must listen to Turn the beat around - Vicky Sue Robinson tonight]

I would have to say "Le Freak" - Chic because it was released at the peak of the Disco phenomenum (bet I've spelt that wrong!) and, correct me if I'm wrong, was probably the biggest selling Disco record ever. :D

Le Freak was my #3 pick. I only decided against it 'cos I don't think it has weathered quite as well as Good Times and Good Times went on to spawn many imitators.
