| Who is the "founder of disco"? Not that anyone on this site would care, but, technically, that distinction goes to Trini Lopez. No, he didn't precede the Bee Gees or K. C. & The Sunshine Band in their genre of late 1970s disco. Rather, he was the first artist to become popular playing (and recording "live" records) at what was known in the early to mid-60s as a "discoteque" or "disco". The biggest of these was the Whiskey A-Go-Go in L.A., where Johnny Rivers played and supposedly recorded his early hits. But Trini Lopez preceded Rivers by at least a year, with his "discoteque" versions of "If I Had a Hammer" and "Lemon Tree". Does this mean that Peter, Paul & Mary are the REAL founders of disco? | Trini Lopez actually did do a disco version of "Lemon Tree". It's on his "Transformed By Time" LP, and produced by Monardo/Wheeler/Bongiovi. |

| A bit of a stretch I think. The Whiskey was and is again a venue for live performances and not a dance venue as we've come to link the word "disco" or "discotheque "to. From The Whiskey website "More rock and roll history has taken place in this one building than in most of the cities in the United States combined. Go-go girls, miniskirted dancers in cages, was started here in the early 60's and started a craze and a national chain of "Whisky-A-Go-Go" s. The Doors played here regularly as they went to the top of the charts. Every major, and some not so major, played here throughout the 60's and 70's. Although severe club competition brought down the roster during the 80's, today it has major names once again."
