Default Recent Tranfers to Digital

Or, what I've been listening to this week.

A real mish-mash of stuff, from early House to Jazz Funk to pure Disco and back including the following:

Jackie McLean - Dr. Jackyll and Mister Funk (I'm really diggin' on this track that's as heavy a heavy slice of Jazz Funk that you'll ever hear. With its free-wheeling sax playing over the top of a groove (the sax playing is reminiscent of Oliver Sain's Bus Stop) that's as funky as a mosquito's tweeter [whatever that means], hunky male chants, girlie cooing and a bass that's as lowdown dirty as a plumber's crack [thanks funkydude], solid offbeat, I'm lovin' it all over again. If only more records were like this......116 BPM)

Booker T & the MGs - Melting Pot (great bluesy, uplifting old style funk track with super scratch guitar a la James Brown et al and searing, souring Hammond organ....116 BPM)

Hiroshi Fukamura - Hunt Up Wind (a biggie for me in London and one of the absolutely best Japanese Jazz Funk dancers from 1980. Really catchy melody, fabulous swingy infectious funk groove that's light and bouncy, plus how many trombone led tracks do you ever get to dance to?....116 BPM)

Tania Maria - Come With Me (sublime, haunting, slinky light latin track with a fantastic scat vocal that's a joy to behold. What a lovely Brazilian feel it has.......94 BPM)

B. Baker & The Chocolate Co. - Snowblower (another light latin influenced Jazz Funk track, only with a much harder brassy edge at times; more typical of what one might call a JF track.....102 BPM)

Rodney Franklin - In The Centre (much better than 'The Groove' IMO, this harder, incredibly funky piece of JF would keep my dancers happy BITD. It almost has a party/goodtime atmosphere to it, partly due to the groove and the great horn stabs that pervade this track..a real zippy swinger......110/111 BPM)

Raul De Souza - Daisie Mae (tricky piece of trombone led JF that didn't fair too well for me BITD. It was just the wrong side of being acceptable for my then crowd, much to my chagrin. Although solidly propulsive it is also slightly disjointed, if you know what I mean? However it's not without its charms and makes for a good inclusion IMO.......130 BPM)

Lenny Williams - You Got Me Running (not quite as good as 'Loosing You' for my money, but this typically soulful, lilting disco track from Mr. W isn't far short. He had one of the most distinguised voices of all, that I used to really love......118-121 BPM)

Michel Columbier - Do It (I loved this record, for its fluorescent yellow vinyl if nothing else. It sounds incredibly like nothing much nowadays, but this track used to do the business for me BITD with its slower disco funk groove. A bit of an oddity for sure......109 BPM)

Cognac - How High (probably one of the best disco records ever made IMO. This had everything going for it. Super funky disco groove, rolling bassline, expressive female vocals, sax led intro and break, cool vibes fills & solo, funky wah-wah guitars, solid backbeat, lotsa percussion and a feel that's just like a slowed down 'Shame.' Brilliant!!.......125 BPM)

Gloria Jones - Bring On The Love
(this is a hustler in a similar mould to say 'Don't Leave Me This Way' that was maybe just slightly out of date by the time it was released. It has a sweet enough feel to it, but for my money it doesn't do enough to really grab me by the hips and make me move with any conviction. However, it does have a certain serenity and uplifting message to it though and Gloria's voice sounds very Gladys Knight......124 BPM)

Larry Page Ork - Erotic Soul
(solid intro, walking bass, highly percussive galloping rhythm, strings 'n' things, corny melody that sounds vaguely oriental [and has an otherwise funky clavinet in the extreme R.H. channel that drags the melody line something rotten]. Extremely solid orchestral workout that had many fans BITD. Play some of Larry's stuff and you get to hear how derivative some of his tunes were, but this is about as original as he got, disco wise......119-122 BPM)

Bonnie Boyer - Got To Give In To Love (this was a solid enough piece of disco music with a very promising intro that sorta pales once the vocals come in. Has a very thin, hard sound [on the UK pressing] that didn't help it. For my money this verged on production line disco.......123 BPM)

Teddy Pendergrass - Only You (what a scorcher of a track, that saw Teddy singing on a less than typically Philly sounding number. Ever so solid straight 4/4 funky disco chugger, with excellent horns, insistant cowbell [Marky!!], what sounds like a bass through a wah-wah peddle [or is it a moog?] and Teddy's superb, smokey, bluesy, imploring vocals that had dancers absolutley lapping it up BITD. Great piece of disco funk that had 'Close The Door' on t'other side in the UK.....120 BPM

Or, Do It Anyway You Wanna - Peoples Choice which has a similar shuffle funk rhythm, almost directly stolen from Booker T, organ etc. :D :D :D Think about THAT @ 116BPM.
