Default Record shops in London

I will be in London one of the next weekends. I would like to visit record shops specializing in VINYL funk and disco stuff.

I've been not searching records in London for a long time now and my old address are probably outdated.

Can you please give me some updated address, and your recommendations?!?

thank you in advance

I have been to Soul Brother Records in Putney. They are very helpful there, but the vinyl prices seem inflated compared to record shops outside London, or, of course, eBay. They only have a little disco, they seem to specialise in Soul/Jazz/Funk.

They do however have a very good selection of CDs which are quite hard to find (or at least they did when I went there, a couple of years ago).

Regards
Darren

Giovanni, Most of the shops here are very overpriced, none more so than Soul Brother (mentioned already), but I do think Crazy Beat is good, even if it takes a long time to get there (it's actually in Essex, not London, on the end of the tube line).

There are also some others, on the outskirts, worth checking out, like Alan's in East Finchley. No bargains in London anymore, really.

I wouldn't mind meeting up with you to talk about Italy and I don't mind showing you some of the shops by way of a thank you. You can contact me at bill@djhistory.com if you want.

LADYBOYGRIMSBY,yes they can be overpriced but you can sometimes get bargains on some lists, but ive noticed a couple of twelves at horrendous prices and over the months its funny to see the price drop like the bottom line on greedy began at £90 :o the real problem buying from these london shops is that sometimes they just dont know how to grade SB only has 2 grades M E and trust me many of their records dont fall into that bracket

Default record shops

Hi Giovanni
Here's a couple of my recommendations:
Reckless Records, Islington: 2nd hand shop but ask for Jeremy Newall...he know's his stuff.
Reckless Records - Berwick St, Soho
Black Market, D'arblay St Soho, good for soulful house
Cheapo Cheapo - Berwick St (Shaftesbury Ave. end) 2nd hand but worth trawling through for very cheap gems.
Plastic Fantastic - Drury Lane, Funky House specialists
Music & video exchange, Notting Hill another 2nd hand chain. There's about 4 stores in Notting Hill
There are loads more record stores around Soho (esp Berwick St) so it's worth spending a few hours (days!) there
Enjoy your trip!

I haven't been in Lodon for ages, but I remember the Brixton area being absolutely loaded with vinyl record stores....is it still like that?

You could try Sounds Familiar in Romford, East London. Limited disco section there but, it's cheap cheapo and always worth a look.

You're better off IMHO checking out the many record fairs which occur around town. These usually happen at the weekends. There used to be a regular one in the Electric Ballroom on the first Saturday of the month. These fairs are good, 'cause you can sometimes haggle with a stall holder as he/she doesn't want to take all their vinyl back home.

Good huntin'.
