Hi I'm new :D ![]() Grace Jones a true survivor. The Amazing Grace As you probably all know; the 70's were a busy time for disco artists. The scene was filled with disco divas such as: Donna Summer, Alicia Bridges, Thelma Houston, Anita Ward and so on, but in my opinion the true artist of the disco scene was Grace Jones. True, all of the aforementioned artists had fairly large hit songs, but did they have style? Most definitely no. Grace Jones hit the scene in 1977 with her debut album "Portfolio" which was a hit, Grace really managed to express the feelin' of the songs, a perfect example of this can be heard on "La Vie en Rose" in which Grace captured the very spirit of the song and on "I Need a Man" she displays a vulnerable side of her usually tough persona. She continued to have hit songs like: Do or Die and On Your Knees. So what do you think about Grace Jones?

Hi "the grace",i'm agree with you,but you can't say that DONNA or THELMA,CANDI STATON...have no style!!! they were beautiful women with great voices, singing good disco stuff and when you looked at them, you feel the disco spirit... but i love grace so much too, because she had strange different style....my favourite song is "pull up to the bumper" levan mix, this is a great disco anthem....and did you know that it was grace who done the first opening of "LE PALACE" in paris, coming on stage wearing leather in SM style  ,singing "la vie en rose"....in memory i've read that was an amazing night for lucky people who was there.....best regards....bye :D

Ha! I actually knew about that. ![]() I've seen Grace live in concert once in 1997. It was great. She came rolling out on stage wearing nothing but panties singing: "I'm nobody's friend - I'm a demolition Man". Ha that was great, she also threw herself at the crowd, biting and beating people over the head with different objects. She's amazingly strong! God she took out at least three men. Grace Jones live.

| grace jones is off course a diva, because of her charisma. she's on one of the buttons i created. she crossed fashion, disco style (i need a man, on your knees etc..), reggae/pop "walking in the rain", "demolition man", "love is the drug" ... i always play one of her songs during my parties. | Being a fellow Jamaican, I suppose my opinion may be biased. That said I liked the way Grace was fearless in pushing her style both musically and in her persona. Most of the time it worked, at least for me. My Jamaican Guy and Pull Up To The Bumper remain among my favorites.

Of all the "disco divas" her image was probably the most cutting edge (even in the 70s when much of her material wasn't).. She had a style that combined so many unique elements together, but for me starting with Warm Leatherette was when her music and image really came together and created something totally unlike anything else before.. it was certainly a long way from the model who sang those disco showtunes :P Amazing Grace indeed..

Grace is a phenomenon, cutting edge Warholian art scene / nightlife icon, dualistically joined in disco divinity with the European Amanda Lear. I have once dared to dance less than one meter away from The Grace in New York - very nearly touched by The Goddess. The things I dreamed the early hours of the day after have condemned me to eternal damnation.

 Sigh... I love Grace and admit that her 70's disco phase is a guilty pleasure. The material is patchy save "La Vie En Rose" which stands out as perhaps the only enduring song of her 1976-1979 output. "On Your Knees" gives an indication of where she was about to go, but is still a rather tried & true disco by numbers song. Her Island Years were her most frutiful/creative. "Use Me", "Pull Up To The Bumper", "Love Is The Drug", "Private Life"...etc. are classics. Three amazing albums too. Her style and unique beauty are influential, just too bad she doesn't get more mainstream props for what she accomplished.
